This newsletter provides information on activities and concerns of sixth grade students and teachers. For more detailed information on individual subject areas, please refer to the teacher's School Fusion page, linked beneath their picture below. Mr. Anderson - Language Arts

We have started our third round of novel groups, and these groups will take us to Memorial Day weekend. We will also be reviewing the results of the timed persuasive essay assignment before finishing our essay writing for the year. There will be no IXL assignments unless assigned to specific students, which will appear in the agenda. Protocols for distributing the results of the SOL test have changed, so thank you for your patience. For now, know that I am very pleased with the students' effort and commitment this year!

Ms. Bosse - Math

Tuesday is the SOL. On Monday we'll be reviewing the Customary and Metric measurement systems. Students should spend some time over the weekend looking through their Interactive Notebooks as well as spending some time on iXL. I know all students will give it their all! We will be doing projects in Regular 6 following the SOL, and in 6 Extended we will be learning the 7th grade standards that we had to move aside because of the snow days!

Mr. Cardone - Social Studies

This week, students will be taking their Westward Expansion test on Wednesday. Also, test corrections for the New Nation test are due by Wednesday 3/18. Our next unit and last unit will be on the Civil War, however, we will not begin this unit until the week of 5/23.

Mr. Cardone - Science

Outside of the Social Studies test, next week will be all about Science, specifically weather. Students will be learning about the following topics: Earth’s energy budget and the distribution of thermal energy, cloud formation, and basic weather information. There will be a couple of quizzes next week so check school fusion and your children’s agenda for further information. Test corrections for the Watershed test are also due on Wednesday 3/18.

SOLs Approaching

Reading: May 9 in the AM (DONE!)

Math: May 17, in the AM

In Sixth Grade, students will be tested in Math and Reading. Students have already started reviewing, and each subject area will continue to assign review materials as needed. In the mean time, please consider the following quick tips:

  • Mark SOL dates on your family calendar, and mention them to your child at home.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude about the tests with your child.
  • Encourage your child to stay relaxed and calm during tests, and practice ways to stay calm if they have had anxiety in the past.
  • Get enough sleep, and eat a good breakfast before an SOL test.
