Sand Creek Zone Fall Newsletter
From the Desk of Sean Dorsey, Sand Creek Zone Leader
A Message From Mr. Dorsey
As we head into our first month of learning for the 2020-2021 school year, we have been excited to interact with students and families via E-Learning. This week, we welcome back our K-2 students in person and next week, we will have grades 3-5 in person.
We will also be maintaining a virtual program for students who would like to continue learning online.
The past weekend, new information came out from the District on our secondary students returning to learn. District 49 will welcome back middle and high school students for in-person learning in a hybrid model starting Monday, Sept. 14.
Overview for Horizon Middle School Students
- Students will return to in-person learning beginning the week of September 14.
- Middle school students will attend at a 50% rate in cohorts defined by alphabet and grade level; A-L and M-Z
- Middle schools will follow a consistent schedule Monday through Thursday.
- Fridays will be flex days for independent learning, small group instruction, and specialized services for individual students.
- Students who currently attend most/all days of the week will continue to do so (such as program-based special education students).
- Students will return to in-person learning beginning the week of September 14.
- High school students will attend at a 25% rate in cohorts defined by alphabet: Group A: A-E, Group B: F-L, Group C: M-R, Group D: S-Z
- SCHS will implement a two-week cycle of block scheduled classes Monday through Thursday.
- Fridays will remain a flex day for in-person and online support, intervention, tutoring, individualized student services, etc.
- SAT assessment will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Friday, Sept. 25 will make up for the Wednesday in-person instruction.
- Students will attend in-person on a day scheduled for their cohort each week – Monday through Thursday.
- Students will attend online and on the same schedule (synchronously) for the rest of the week.
- A limited number of junior/senior level classes (which may include concurrent enrollment) will remain exclusively online to limit the number of students in the building at one time.
- Our intention is to increase in-person attendance to 50% of students after fall break – again, depending on county and district health data.
- Students who currently attend most/all days of the week will continue to do so (such as program-based special education students).
We, as always, thank you for your enduring grace, trust and understanding. We invite you to visit our Back to School page at D49.org for more information and the thinking behind this decision. Please continue to monitor our regular channels of communication for updates.
