LatinX Scientists Celebrated in Biology Classes

On Friday, October 8th, students in Mrs. Leonard's Biology classes watched a presentation in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Three student members of the Latinx Club, Sandra Orella, Tania Catonga Esquivias, and Darlin Contreras Gomera volunteered to create a presentation to showcase Latinx Scientists. First, students learned about the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month and the diversity of Latinx people from an introductory video. France A. Cordova, Mario J. Molina, and Ellen Ochoa were famous Latinx scientists who were highlighted in the presentation. The students researched the scientists and provided information on their lives and contributions to science. Students enjoyed seeing the actual scientists in videos talking about their research.

Students in Mrs. Leonard's class enjoyed learning more about Latinx scientists. They were impressed with the obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their milestones in science. One student commented, "I can't believe that girls weren't allowed to take a physics class."

Another student remarked, "I like how these scientists try to inspire young people to think of ways to help the planet, try to think outside the box, and not listen to what people tell them what they can or can't do."

Students in the Biology classes will continue to learn more about famous scientists during the school year.

10th Grade English

Mrs. Tyson’s Advanced 10th grade English students worked on a hexagonal thinking review activity to prepare for their unit exam on Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird.

General Science

Students in Ms. Peglow's General Science classes participated in a Biome "Speed Dating" activity where they quickly met with peers to share information about their given biome and learned about other biomes. Students had the opportunity to make a hat for the special event as extra credit that depicted various plants, animals, and unique features of their biome.

Advanced Science

Students in Mrs. Peglow's Advanced Science classes analyzed biome distribution maps along with graphs depicting climate conditions. Students needed to match each biome given with its correct distribution map and climatogram. This challenging event was met with some healthy competition for a first, second, and third-place score and prize. Kierney Weigle, Anna Walmer, Keira Gorman, and Lexi Hartman won 1st Place overall with an impressive 14 minutes and 10 seconds.

Students in Mrs. Lieberum's Physics classes are concluding a unit on Kinematics, the study of describing motion. This week, they analyzed free fall motion with picket fences, photogates, and Vernier Logger Pro computer software. Pictured are Zachary Cool and Morgan Unger
