LatinX Scientists Celebrated in Biology Classes
On Friday, October 8th, students in Mrs. Leonard's Biology classes watched a presentation in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Three student members of the Latinx Club, Sandra Orella, Tania Catonga Esquivias, and Darlin Contreras Gomera volunteered to create a presentation to showcase Latinx Scientists. First, students learned about the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month and the diversity of Latinx people from an introductory video. France A. Cordova, Mario J. Molina, and Ellen Ochoa were famous Latinx scientists who were highlighted in the presentation. The students researched the scientists and provided information on their lives and contributions to science. Students enjoyed seeing the actual scientists in videos talking about their research.
Students in Mrs. Leonard's class enjoyed learning more about Latinx scientists. They were impressed with the obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their milestones in science. One student commented, "I can't believe that girls weren't allowed to take a physics class."
Another student remarked, "I like how these scientists try to inspire young people to think of ways to help the planet, try to think outside the box, and not listen to what people tell them what they can or can't do."
Students in the Biology classes will continue to learn more about famous scientists during the school year.
