Mrs. Knight's Letter for NES Concerts
Parents, please return all school forms ASAP. These are essential to ensure we have the most up-to-date information for your child. Thank you for your continued support in filling these forms out for us.
Norwayne Elementary LITERACY Spotlight

Counselor's Corner with Ms. Achberger
January is going to be all about emotions for Bobcats!
In K-2, we are going to be focusing on naming our emotions. In 3rd, we will discuss the different levels of emotions. Our upper elementary (4th & 5th) will finish their study skills lessons and begin the conversation about strong emotions!
Kdg.: Mad and Calm
1st: Calm and Frustrated
2nd: Proud and Disappointed
3rd: When to Take a Break and Levels of Happiness
4th & 5th: Study Zones and Strong Emotions!
At home, all ages will benefit from being encouraged to name their emotions. For example, instead of “I’m good”, try “I feel calm.”. J

Every effort will be made to announce delays/closings as early as possible. Also, there may be an announcement to delay school openings with a re-evaluation period to possibly close schools. All weather-related announcements will be made through the following media outlets: Wooster radio WQKT 104.5, and WKVX 960 AM will broadcast school delay or closing information. Cancellations/delays will also be reported to WQMX 94.9, WONE 97.3, WNCO 101.3, WAKR 1590 AM, and Cleveland TV stations, Channels 3, 5, 8 and 19. Transportation Trivia Question for January: (Look for the answer somewhere in the newsletter)
Would it be a good idea to open the emergency door or emergency windows on the bus just for fun?
Student Handbook Talking Points
- If your child has a fever they must remain out of school for a minimum of 48 hours. They are able to return after these days as long as the last 24 hours they were fever-free without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
DRESS CODE REMINDER
- Tank tops, muscle shirts, bare midriffs, or sleeveless shirts are NOT permitted. Also, socks are to be worn at ALL times, even with sandals.
- With the weather changing, we do go outside for recess as much as possible. We do not have ample extra clothing for students so please ensure your child dresses for the weather appropriately.
OUTDOOR vs INDOOR RECESS
- Now that cold weather has arrived, please be reminded that 20 degrees is the benchmark at which time we look at other weather conditions such as moisture and wind chill to make a decision regarding whether we have indoor or outdoor recess.
2021-2022 NES BREAKFAST and LUNCHES
Norwayne Masks Update as of January 1, 2022
- For the 2021-2022 school year, students/families will have the option to choose what they would like to do with mask-wearing when on Norwayne grounds.
- The two exceptions remain with bus transportation and students who have a positive case in the family but are showing no symptoms. Students will be required to wear masks while being transported on school busses. Students with a positive case in the family with that family member isolating may continue to come to school as long as they are not exhibiting symptoms as long as they wear a mask at all times.
****Please note that we can update the mask stance at any time as we continue to listen and follow mandates from the governor and health departments as new information is made available during the pandemic.
We thank everyone so much for helping comply with all the changes that have taken place. Together we can accomplish so much and continue to make Norwayne amazing!

TRANSPORTATION TRIVIA ANSWER
Answer: No unless there is an emergency the doors and windows must not be tampered with. It is actually something that would result in disciplinary action being taken if NOT due to an emergency

4th and 5th Grade Spotlight
For the month of December, the 4th & 5th-grade girls from the Impact Club helped organize a coin drive to help support families in need this holiday season. There are quite a few girls from both 4th & 5th grade who are involved in this organization & willingly gave their time to help count all the coins brought in. Here are 4 of the many 5th grade girls that helped out:
- Kya Gasser loves to play soccer. She enjoys studying science & eating Snickers.
- Emma Jentes is quite a baker & enjoys eating apple crisp. Beyond Impact Club she enjoys the STEAM club & playing basketball. Any free time she has she likes to work with training kittens.
- Piper Moore enjoys athletics, she plays soccer, softball & basketball. She also enjoys 4H and hunting and fishing. She loves to do art & spend time with her friends. Chameleons, cows, goats, frogs & dogs are among her favorite animals. She loves to spend time outside.
- Ryenn Urban enjoys playing both soccer & basketball. She likes to study social studies. Her favorite food to eat is sushi.
All of these girls definitely have the heart to help others.
JANUARY STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Nicholson
- 20 years
- I love helping students make goals and encouraging them to work hard to reach their goals.
The PTO duct taped Mr. Dreher to the wall one year because the school had reached a fundraising goal and it was hilarious!
- Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better. ~Maya Angelou
Mrs. Timmerman
- I have been teaching at Norwayne for 29 years! I have taught preschool, kindergarten, and first grade.
- I love the sweet smiles and hugs from the kids every day!
For the past few years, we have been making Buckeye necklaces in honor of the Ohio State/ Xichigan game. As I was explaining that they were rival college football teams and they were playing each other that weekend one of my girls bewilderedly asked, "Do we all have to go?"
- In the words of Bryan Skavnak, "Be the kid who is happy for other people. Be the kid who does the right thing. Be the nice kid!"
Mrs. Yoder
- I started working at Norwayne in August of 2013.
- I love being around and interacting with the children. Just seeing their smiles every day makes me smile.
- I don't have one specific funny moment. We are always having funny moments in the kitchen. We all like to have fun in there and just pick on each other and laugh and have a good time.
- Advice that I would give to a student would be to enjoy these years. School may be hard sometimes, but work hard and get involved in activities and just have fun.
NEW Parent Drop Off and Pick Up for 2021-2022
A few important notes for morning drop off:
Our morning drop-off routine is running very smoothly. Thank you to Officer Hartman and the parents for hopping on the double line-up system allowing us to get more cars in the loop and away from Route 3. Please refer to the picture below in regards to the two-lane system. Parents, please be cognizant of the curb we are acquiring some damage as tires grind against the concrete.
- Students being dropped off or riding their bikes will be allowed to enter the building at 8:40 am, as we did last year. They will not be permitted to stand outside and wait for the cafeteria doors to open.
- During the morning drop-off time, when exiting the parking lot, cars will only be allowed to make a right-hand turn. This is something we did last year, and it helped reduce the congestion and improve the flow of traffic.
- We ask that you do not park in the drop-off loop. If you need to park to bring something to the office or walk your child to the door, this needs to occur in the parking spaces. This way, the loop will not become clogged as it is a single-car loop.
- Students are able to exit their cars only if they are parked along the curb. Please do not get out of the car in the grass at this time. Use the crosswalk as the cut-off for now.
- Please make sure to pull all the way up so we can ensure we get as many cars on the curb as possible.
A few important notes for parent pick up:
We would like the parents to know we appreciate your patience in the afternoon as the afternoon pick-up crew works tirelessly to ensure we have a quick, efficient, and above all else safe system in place for the children. We are averaging 70+ cars at the end of the day can you believe that! Parents, please be cognizant of the curb we are acquiring some damage as tires grind against the concrete.
- Pick-up will occur as it has in the past, except for the one-direction loop we will now have.
- We ask parents to remain in their cars as staff will walk students to their cars to ensure safety.
- During pick-up times, cars will only be able to make a right-hand turn when exiting the parking lot. Again this helps with reducing congestion and improving the flow of traffic.
- As you drive by the crosswalk please have your window down to let Mrs. Knight or one of the other workers know who you are there to pick up.
- We appreciate the parents working quickly to help buckle their children.
NES Parking Lot Video (Mr. Sette walking)
NES Parking Lot Video (Cars Driving)
PLEASE MAKE SURE WHEN DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP IN THE LOOP YOUR CAR REMAINS IN PARK UNTIL YOUR CHILD HAS FULLY EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WALKED BY YOU ON THE CONCRETE CURB.
