Teachers Keep Learning!
Responsive Classroom Refresher
Grade 2 Professional Learning Community
Teachers Unpacking and Sorting our New Language Arts Curriculum
What do teachers do all summer? Well, after taking some well deserved time to rest and relax, our staff members spend a significant amount of time getting ready for the upcoming school year. In addition to working in classrooms and preparing materials, many many staff members have been continuing their learning this summer. Some have completed courses at Salem State, others have completed coursework online, and many others have attended workshops and conferences to continue their professional development.
At the beginning of this month, several of our teachers spent 4 days at an intensive Responsive Classroom Training and another group of staff members participated in a 2 Day refresher of Responsive Classroom this week. Responsive Classroom isn't a "program", but rather a to classroom management, while giving significant credence to the social emotional needs of our students. The RC folks describe it as "A student-centered, social and emotional learning approach to teaching and discipline. It is comprised of practices designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classrooms and school communities for both students and teachers." Many of our teachers employ some of the aspects of this philosophy such as Morning Message, Morning Meeting, Quiet Time and Closing Circle.
Our Lead Teachers across the District spent 2 full days learning together to improve their facilitation skills, leadership skills, and deepen their knowledge of using data protocols.
Our grade level PLCs and Mental Health Teams have also been meeting to spend time developing goals, creating agendas and adopting protocols for examining student data.
Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Team met over the summer to review and align systems that will help our students learn how to work together, take responsibility for their behaviors, how to learn from mistakes and how make better decisions moving forward.
We are grateful to the District for supporting this learning as we continue to support our teachers and our students' academic and social emotional development.
Supplies and Popsicles!
On Thursday, August 31st we invite Grades 1-3-to join us in the classrooms and on the playground as we kick off the year together with popsicles and supplies. All students and parents in grades 1-3 are welcome to come to school and visit their classroom from 9:15-9:45. This is an opportunity for your child to meet the teacher, peruse the classroom, ease any first day jitters, and drop off any supplies you may have for the classroom. We ask you to do your best to respect this time period as teachers will need to move on to other professional development commitments.
After visiting the classroom, you and your children are invited to transition to our playground where the Brown PTO will be on hand to provide a popsicle treat and an opportunity for families to check out our beautiful gardens! For families wishing to drop off school supplies on this day, here is the link for each grade. Click HERE for Grade Level School Supply Lists
