Family Corner-Family Mission Statements
Welcome to October…the month we focus on Family Mission Statements here at Brougham. This past Thursday (September 26) information for the completion of your family’s mission statement came home with your student. Please read the 2-sided handout to guide you. When you have your mission statement completed, write it on the flag that is printed on cardstock. The top of the flag has a line for your family name. Please return it to school with your child as soon as you complete it. By writing a Family Mission Statement, the message to your children is that your family is important—you know what you stand for and how, together, you are going to live by it. Family Mission Statements will be displayed in the hallways during conference week. Thank you for your participation!

Brougham’s Amazing Artist News
Happy Fall y’all!
I have had such a wonderful time getting to know your students! I am so lucky to be here at Brougham and look forward to the year making fabulous art. Thank you for your comments and purchases on Artsonia! Every time you buy a keepsake with your student’s artwork on it you are helping us buy high quality and exciting art supplies. You can view our school gallery here. If you aren’t able to access your child’s portfolio just email me and we will figure it out. What exactly are the Brougham artists up to? Well….
Kindergarten has been exploring painting and has begun to try out some sculpture techniques that are sure to spark creativity. First graders have been inspired by some wonderful children’s picture books and had the chance to practice painting, drawing, and collaging. Second grade students have practiced color mixing, sponge painting, and made some very fancy flying insect art. Third grade is learning about some famous artists throughout history including Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Paul Klee. Fourth grade showed off their painting skills with some lovely fall inspired sunflower still life paintings. Fifth grade students painted landscapes that show perspective and were influenced by their personal memories or fantasy places.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM
-HEARING SCREENING-
On October 3rd, we will have our annual Hearing Screening that includes the following grades; Early Childhood, Kdg, 1st, 2nd, and 5th. New students to the district will also be tested. Select students will be tested in 3rd and 4th grade with IEP’s.
-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE GUIDELINES -
The start of the school year is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we take to keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
- We reinforce frequent hand washing with our students and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or their sleeve (not their hands).
- In addition, we refer to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) recommendations when determining the need to send a student home from school.
- For example, students are to be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication before returning to school.
- Students with vomiting or diarrhea are to be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
- Students with blisters and/or honey-colored crusts should remain home until cleared by a doctor as non-infectious or until 24 hours of antibiotic treatment is received.
- Students diagnosed with influenza should remain home (except for medical appointments and care) for 7 days after the first symptoms appear to insure complete recovery and avoid transmission to other students as determined by the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE).
- Occasionally we receive questions about head lice management in our schools, and we have included a document with up-to-date information.
- As needed, we will inform parents when we see an increase in illnesses in our school population with the potential for rapid spread among students and staff (such as influenza) or in the rare instance we have a mandatory reportable disease occur in our population, like Mumps. General head lice notifications are not recommended as they have been found to cause harm and lead to unnecessary treatment. Instead, the school nurse will assess the need for notification on an individual basis to those considered close contacts.
REMEMBER if there is any medication to be given at school, all student medications, including over-the-counter, must be administered through the health room and require a doctor’s note.
If your child is absent or checks out early due to illness, and there is a school sponsored activity, district policy states that your child cannot participate that afternoon or evening.
Any questions, feel free to contact the Nurse Stokes at 780-7356.
