Canby High School Family Newsletter
For the Week of November 11th to November 17th, 2021
The end of the term is close (I know, I’ve said it before!) and final exams are in less than two weeks. We hope our students take advantage of next week to prepare. For our Freshmen and Sophomores who have yet to experience finals, connect with your teachers and find out the expectations. Some teachers don’t have formal exams and focus on other ways to finish assessing your progress. Find out what to expect and relax. You’ve got this!
Next Tuesday, we will be conducting a “Lockdown” safety drill. We’ll be on a PM assembly schedule that day, and students will participate in the drill at the beginning of 5th period.
In the world of sports, congratulations to our champion Dance Team! In their first competition of the season, the dancers placed first in multiple competitions at the Mount Hood Dance Festival last Saturday. Also, our football team continues to impress with a decisive first round playoff victory last Friday over Lebanon High School 37-7. Next round is this Friday, at home, against #5 Thurston HS. Kickoff is 7pm.
Today is National Signing Day, and we extend our congratulations to seniors Ashley Peterson and Bella Short. Ashley has committed to Central Washington University to play soccer, and Bella is signing with Michigan State to row crew. We are proud of you, ladies!
Finally, tomorrow is Veterans' Day. In many parts of the world it is called Remembrance Day. It was established on the day the armistice occurred, ending World War I, on November 11th, 1918. We should all take a moment and remember the sacrifices many men and women have made in defense of our country. Thank you to all who have served!
Stay healthy and strong, Canby! Go Cougars!

This week, fall sports enter the OSAA playoffs. As we are hosting on behalf of the OSAA, both parents and students are charged entry. Parents pay $8 for the first two rounds and students are $5 for all rounds. Also, in accordance with the broadcasting rights for the OSAA, the NFHS Network will not be free of charge and require a monthly subscription in order to watch the playoffs. Please plan accordingly to cheer on your Cougars!
Winter Sports sign-ups are now open. Please visit www.registermyathlete.com to make sure you are fully registered prior to participating in practices or games. Please contact email@example.com for more information.
Key Club/ASB Canned Food Drive:
The CHS Key Club, with the support of ASB Leadership, is sponsoring a Canned Food Drive and we are starting to collect food this week through Friday, 11/19. The donations will benefit CHS families, as well as the Canby Center. Collections will take place in 2nd period classes.
Please contribute any non-perishable items you can spare!
Canby School District is now offering the community a simple way to report student safety threats. SafeOregon is a 24-hour anonymous tip-line individuals can use if they see or hear about instances of bullying, violence, threats, drug use, suicidal thoughts and more. The goal is to keep students safe by preventing threats from coming to fruition.
There are a number of ways to report, including:
Texting or calling 844-4-SAFE-OR (844-472-3367)
Online at safeoregon.com
Via the SafeOregon app
Please help us keep Canby’s kids safe by utilizing this program.

Join Us-Employment in Canby Schools
While parent volunteering continues to be on hold until further notice, we do have employment opportunities in our schools for part-time positions like instructional assistants, nutrition services, custodians and more. We are also seeking on-call substitutes for those positions, which would provide even greater flexibility. Visit our employment website to view all current opportunities.
Upcoming Parent Input Opportunities
We are still collecting names of interested parents who want to serve on committees that provide planning input for the future CHS bond construction projects. Our partners in this process, Mahlum Architects, will soon be looking for more community input through focus groups. If you are interested, please respond by completing this form.
CHS Video Broadcast Recruitment
Parents and students, do you have an interest in live streaming and announcing events? Would you like to help CHS and the community? Do you want to be a part of our Cougar team?
We are hoping to create a live stream broadcast network of volunteers to cover CHS sports and activities in a professional manner in keeping with the hard work that our students and athletes put in. Our vision is to develop a dynamic partnership with CTV-5 to support these broadcasts with interested students and adults providing the camera work, production, and commentary. If you have an interest in participating with this after school club, please contact Tyler Francke with The Canby Current and Now Hear This Studios at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your contact information and any prior media experience.
Attendance and Sick Students
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email email@example.com.
Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience. Please partner with us to ensure great attendance and to remove any attendance barriers.
If you have any questions or problems with school bus transportation, please email Student Transport of America (STA) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
