Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the March 6, 2019, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern Families:
This month we are supporting our social emotional learning by reviewing the problem-solving steps that we have learned through our Second Step Curriculum. We hope that you can continue to reflect through conversation around problem solving at home as well. The lessons are summarized below.
We all have problems that can be hard to solve. Using the Second Step Problem Solving Steps can help us solve our problems. The first step is S: Say the problem. When you have a problem, it's very important to say what the problem is respectfully and without blame. Knowing exactly what the problem is will help you find the best solutions.
Next, is the T step: "Think of solutions." Solutions help you solve the problem. They're ideas about what you could do. Your solutions must always be safe and respectful.
The E step stands for "explore the consequences." A consequence is something that might happen if we chose to do one of our solutions. A consequence can be positive or negative. Exploring consequences helps us pick the best solution for our problem.
The final step is P: "Pick the best solution!" Once you have named the positive and negative consequence of each solution you thought of, you can pick the solution that works best. It's easy to remember our Problem-Solving Steps because they spell the word "step," S - T - E - P. Using the Problem Solving Steps will help you get along better with your friends and family.
We encourage you to use these steps as a resource at any time you need to navigate problem solving with your child.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Chastain

Coronavirus Update from Administration
Parents, as you are aware, the coronavirus (COVID-19) is making a lot of headlines in the national news. We want to update parents on what we are currently doing in our schools to prevent the spread of any illness.
Our custodians are following a “flu protocol” type of cleaning in all of our buildings. They are concentrating on disinfecting areas that are used and/or touched frequently, such as light switches, drinking fountains, doorknobs, etc.
We are encouraging frequent hand washing among students and staff, as it’s one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick. Hand sanitizer is also available and can be used when needed. Our school nurses are closely monitoring students who are showing any signs or symptoms of an infectious illness.
Listed below are some additional recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help prevent the spread of germs:
- Stay home when you are sick. The CDC recommends that you remain home until you are “fever free” for at least 24 hours.
- Seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms that cause concern.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, or by coughing into the inside of your elbow. Throw any used tissues away in trash.
- Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in your home.
We will continue to consult with our local, state and federal partners and follow their recommendations on the spread of the coronavirus. In the event our schools would be closed for an extended period of time, we would utilize eLearning days for students.
We are committed to the health and safety of our students and staff. For more information on the coronavirus, click here.
We thank you for doing your part to keep our school community healthy.
