Shepherd Hill Regional High School
Newsletter - March 2022
As we welcome March and return from our February break, we hit the longest stretch of school days in the school calendar. We all have the opportunity to build a lot of momentum within our learning throughout the month of March. We are only a short period into the second semester. Regardless of how you feel about your performance in the first half of the year, there is plenty of time to reflect, set new goals, and build new habits that can lead to a strong finish to the year. For the Class of 2022, the remainder of the year will be in warp speed and before you know it we will all be at the DCU center celebrating you as you enter post-graduate life. Enjoy every minute of your final months on the Hill.
As the month gets underway, I ask that you mark your calendars for our Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday March 10th from 1pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. This will be similar to the Fall conferences with offering both virtual and in person appointments. All teacher/classroom links for sign ups will be out by no later than Friday March 4th. This will be sent in a communication to all parents and caregivers. We look forward to seeing you on this night.
As we pass the midpoint of the third marking term, it is time to begin preparations for the 2022-2023 school year. Over the next month teachers will continue to provide students with recommendations for next year’s courses and students will begin meeting with guidance counselors to select classes for the next school year. This is an important process and we need all students to be connecting with their teachers and guidance counselors around completing their class schedules. Any questions please reach out to your guidance counselor.
I also want to remind you that when we return from vacation the DCRSD will move forward with the Governors and DESE’s recommendation regarding the mask mandate and mask-wearing in school. You can review their discussion of the topic from the last school committee meeting via video on the district website. This means that effective at the start of the school day on Monday, February 28, students, staff, and guests will have the choice of whether or not to wear masks in the school building or at school events (including at athletics practices and games), except for on the school bus or in the Health Office, as well as when a student who tests positive returns to the building from a 5 day quarantine, they will be required to wear a mask for an additional 5 days. I recognize that this is a significant change and will be welcome by many students and staff. I also understand that this change may be a source of stress for some that are not ready to remove their masks at school and may be nervous about being around others who are not wearing a mask. If you or your child are anxious about the implications of this change please reach out to our support staff and we can work with you discreetly to be sure our students are feeling supported and safe. As a school, a state, and a country, we have all been through an exceedingly difficult last 22 months, and this change represents a major step in our journey toward returning our school environment to a sense of normalcy. I am deeply grateful for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this challenge together. I fully support the Faculty and Staff on the Hill and thank them for all they have done and will continue to do.
The Battle of the Borders
The Battle of the Borders will run from the Tuesday, March 1st through Monday, March 28. We will be raising paper goods again as well as feminine products. It will be Dudley Elementary, DMS, & Mason Rd vs. CMS, CES, & Heritage vs. Shepherd Hill. We will send NHS students down to each school to count up and tally all items on the 28th after school.
Spread the word! We would love to have it be as successful as last year!

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so, you can get outside quickly.
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area.
- Install alarms on every level of the home including the basement.
- It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Use smoke alarms with photoelectric technologically to mitigate false alarms.
- Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Term 2 Report Cards
Report cards were posted to the portal on February 4th. There is a new feature under the parent portal where a parent can sign, acknowledging receipt of the report card. Please utilize this feature.
Midyear reports are in the process of being sent out for seniors shortly after report cards are posted. These reports will include revised gpa, rank, credit totals and will be sent out to any college a student has applied either electronically through Naviance or hard copy mail.
It is very common that seniors will receive communications from colleges asking for these reports. Counselors will automatically send these out for you.

ENGLISH 12 SENIOR SELECTIONS
Students will enroll in 2 courses, each one semester in length(fall and spring).
Two semester courses = 1.00 Credit
Level: H, CP Learning Expectations: 1, 2, 3
Prerequisites: Passing grade in English 11
Objectives:
- To develop an awareness and appreciation of literature.
- To further the understanding of the various elements of literature as well as to increase the knowledge of different forms and genres.
- To prepare students for the kind of writing commonly required in college courses and/or in the world of work.
- To develop mature patterns of thought so as to be able to effectively organize those patterns for writing and public speaking.
- To develop knowledge of reference sources including those available on the internet and to develop facility in using research resources effectively.
- To teach the mechanics of grammar, punctuation and standard usage for use in all forms of communication.
- To further the development of vocabulary.
Senior Selections (select 2 with one alternative choice):
- Dystopian Literature Students will explore the origins of the genre and how it often follows major historical events such as war, political changes, and terrorist activity. The curriculum will focus on novels and short stories, as well as a study of film adaptations. Students will be assessed on their understanding of the texts/genre and will be tasked with composing literary analysis papers and projects to hone their analysis skills of literature.
- Women’s Literature Students will explore the genre and read canonical works from female authors of various historical time frames and cultural backgrounds. Selections will include novels, essays, poetry, drama, oratory, and short stories. Students will also be expected to analyze literature and compose related essays.
- Chills & Thrills Students will explore the horror genre through literature and film, examining the many ways in which authors scare us. Students will analyze these works through a critical lens and apply their analysis of the works and the genre in short analysis papers and research projects.
- War Stories Students will read various novels and poems about war and conflict world wide and from various time frames. Students will explore some of the socio-political reasons for said conflicts and how they impact the author’s experience. Students will examine some of the universal truths/themes about cruelty and suffering.
Policies Governing Senior Selection English Courses:
All courses stress writing: a literary analysis and many shorter assignments are required each semester. In addition, major creative assignments and/or research projects are required in most courses.
- Required courses for graduation: Before graduating, every student must take and pass two half-year English elective courses from the list above.
- Minimum number of courses: Students must take a minimum of two semester courses. Students must take a minimum of one course in each semester during the student’s senior year.
- Space Availability: On a space-available basis and with the teacher’s approval, students may take a second English course in any one semester, either for enrichment or to make up for an English credit deficiency.
- Enrollment: No student will be permitted to enroll in more than two English courses during any semester and in no more than three in an academic year. In rare cases, an independent study may be taken for English credit, but only with the express permission of the guidance coordinator, administration, department coordinator, and the English teacher.
- Limiting enrollments: Staffing and scheduling constraints restrict the number of sections in some traditionally popular elective courses. Seniors should make alternative course selections with this in mind, realizing that they will be placed, whenever possible, in one of their alternate choices if they cannot be scheduled into their first choice elective.
