Be A Guardian - Be Encouraging
“There is a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in something, you do it only when its convenient. When you are committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”-Ken Blanchard
At 86, I've observed a recurring challenge hindering our pursuit of truth ― the tendency to focus on "who" is right and wrong, rather than "what" is right and wrong.
Shifting our focus from "who" to "what" can bestow upon us the gift of empathy. When we seek to understand the motivations behind diverse opinions, it fosters meaningful dialogues and breaks down walls of hostility. Let empathy serve as the bridge that connects our hearts and minds.
Embarking on this journey towards understanding "what" requires humility. Recognizing that no one possesses an absolute monopoly on truth, we must remain open to growth and change. Humility empowers us to learn from one another, fostering personal and societal evolution.
In the pursuit of what is right and wrong, collaboration thrives. We should set aside the constant need to prove ourselves right and create a space where cooperation can flourish. Together, we become a force of greater creativity, innovation, and compassion.
Beyond our individual growth, prioritizing "what" over "who" unites humanity. As we walk this path, we leave a lasting legacy for future generations. By embracing wisdom, empathy, and unity, we pass on a transformative example.
Our time is precious, but by seeking to understand "what," we embark on a journey towards more profound truth, unity, and peace. Let us inspire each other to embrace this profound shift. -George Raveling
“People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”-Vince Lombardi
MESSAGE FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MIKE NOLAN
Greetings Sports Fans!
What a week last week in Guardian Athletics!!
First off, it was Battle of the Birds week last week with our cross-town rival, the Lincoln Cardinals. Our Volleyball Program traveled to Lincoln on Tuesday and took care of business. They are sitting second in league and have a hold on a great seed for the playoffs. Then on Thursday, Football traveled to Lincoln where the Guardians dominated from kick off to the final horn. It was great to see so many Guardians in attendance and family members! Huge thanks to our Football Coaching Staff for all they do in building a foundation of success for our community!
On the pitch, our Women’s Soccer Program had a great week celebrating our outgoing senior class with a huge victory over the Riders from Roosevelt. Fantastic night for the program and families. Men’s soccer had a huge week as well going 2-0 with big wins over Grant and Roosevelt.
Our XC Team traveled to the 3rd annual Rose City race and had another great showing. The Varsity Team finished 4th for the day with Asher Danielson leading the charge once again! On the JV side, Lev Mitchell and Casey Miller finished in the top ten and the team finished 4th . On the women’s side, Josie Fale had a top ten finish for the Guardians. Excellent day for the XC Guardians!
We are nearing the finish line of the Fall Season and I want to extend my gratitude to everyone this year that has been rooting our Guardians on, our coaches for all the work they do, and our staff here at IBW leading the charge in our building. Great to Be A Guardian!
THE WEEK AHEAD
We have an absolutely massive Varsity Football Game at Roosevelt this Friday that could very well decide the PIL Championship. If you have been to Roosevelt for a Football Game, you know that the capacity of the stands is not that big so get there early if you want a seat!
Glow Night on Tuesday night for our Volleyball Program! We will be handing out glow sticks, glow glasses, and everything else that can glow for the evening. We rented two spotlights for the event as well so come early and help us celebrate our outgoing seniors and their families. We will be turning out the lights and cracking the sticks for the event!
Women’s Soccer has one more important league game against Cleveland this week at their place. PIL Women’s Soccer is raging this year with three teams in the top ten and six that will probably make the playoffs with the Guardians as one of them. On the men’s side, it is just as competitive with six teams potentially making the playoffs. The Guardians host Cleveland this week for a huge soccer showdown.
And finally, the XC Team will travel to Fernhill for their last regular season meet before Districts. The link to the full schedule is below.
Great to Be A Guardian!

SEPTEMBER STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
Ainsley Porter, Cross Country, Sophomore
Ainsley Porter is a relentless leader. She is a terrific advocate for her learning and her classmates. She is a fully invested community member. She is active in both clubs and athletics. Ainsley has the ability to uplift an entire class with her positive and engaging attitude. She is adored by peers, teachers and community members. She is an excellent student with a great ability to add to the class narrative. If you have a chance, ask her about her thoughts on ranch dressing. Ainsley is a force of positive energy. She fearlessly takes on academic challenges and is a leader in her classes as well as on the Cross Country team. She is inclusive of students of all ages and backgrounds and takes the initiative to step out of her comfort zone to maximize her learning.
Cole Aman, Men's Soccer, Senior
Cole is an outstanding student-athlete on our campus. He is engaged, diligent with his schoolwork, positive, respectful, and goes out of his way to embody what a Guardian student-athlete is supposed to represent.
Cole's strength is his ability to take risks and stay curious. He has created some fantastic projects and I look forward to seeing the results of his most recent EPL project surrounding results and valuation. Cole is always eager to have a conversation to further his understanding and is a pleasure to teach.
GUARDIANS OF THE WEEK
Women's Soccer, Dana Savage, Senior
Our Athlete of the Week is Dana Savage for her confidence and positivity while being down at half, and her 2 goals against Roosevelt.
Men's Soccer, Jaden Igarta, Senior
Senior forward Jaden Igarta scored a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Grant on Monday in the Guardian’s first victory over the Generals since 2018. Jaden contributed two more goals on Friday in a 4-1 win at Roosevelt. He leads 6A scoring with his current tally of 20 goals, 8 in conference play.
Volleyball, Olivia Mersereau, Senior
Holding down the back row all week and weekend, Olivia was all over the court. Hustling, staying positive and not letting balls hit the floor, she was leading by example. Her aces and no missed serves were an added bonus. Keep it up!
Football, Beckett Mersereau, Junior
Beckett played an exceptional game in the front-6 against Lincoln. Sacks, TFLs, QB hurries, even a rare interception while playing in the defensive front after chasing down an attempted screen play. Beckett took away a large chunk of Lincoln’s offense by himself and made a huge contribution to a collective defensive effort that was our best of the season!
Men's Cross Country, Asher Danielson, Senior
Asher Daielson continues his very impressive season with another victory in a major competition. Asher again took on the top runners in the northwest region and came up victorious. Asher's last two races have put him in the national spotlight. He won the very prestigious Nike Portland meet two weeks ago and followed that up the win at the Rose City invitational. His leadership and work ethic are what truly set him apart. Despite his individual accomplishments his focus is squarely on the success of his team.

Women's Cross Country, Phoebe Robinson, Senior
Phoebe Robinson is having a fantastic senior season. Her hard work and consistent stacking or quality work were evident on Friday at the Rose City Invitational. She broke 20 mins for the first time in the 5k which places her #20 on our all-time list. Her dedication to her improvement and quality leadership make her a team favorite. She is relentlessly positive and strives to do everything she can to help her team. She is an amazing person.
Cheer - Lila Pummel
Cheer’s athlete of the week is Lila Pummel, a freshman on our Green (JV) Squad. She’s hard working, dedicated and extremely resilient, specifically when it comes to stunting. Additionally Lila always has a good attitude at practice and on the sideline. She’s been a great addition to our program this year and we’re looking forward to watching her grow over the next four years.
WEEKLY TID-BITS
"Find the habits that bring you peace and choose them, again and again and again."
I. It Takes What It Takes You’ll learn that champions don’t think negatively or positively; they think neutrally. You’ll learn that champions behave as if they have no choice. You’ll learn that champions make detailed plans. You’ll learn that champions visualize what they want. You’ll learn that champions lead themselves before they lead others. Source: Trevor Moawad and Andy Staples, It Takes What It Takes
II. This Thing Called Love Love is much bigger than relationships... love is the way you heal yourself the kindness you give others the gentleness you give yourself in turbulent times the space you hold for close friends the intention with which you live in the present, and the energy that changes the world Love is every moment that elevates the human experience and all the small things that make life shine. III. Discovering Gratitude’s Magic “If you can’t find happiness – if it’s too hard or too heavy or too difficult – lean into gratitude. Gratitude begets happiness.” ― Nicole Walters Here are gratitude affirmations for us to revisit whenever we need to: May I find peace and gratitude for the gift of life and each precious moment I get to experience. I am deeply grateful for the love that surrounds me, the challenges that strengthen me, and the beauty found in both the remarkable and the ordinary. May my heart remain open to the blessings that come my way, both big and small. May I always remember the abundance of grace that I find on this healing path, and may I continue to soften and share that same grace out into the world. No matter how bumpy the road gets, I extend deep thanks. I cherish this journey as I learn to honor and acknowledge the divine in all things. Source: Alex Elle, Gratitude Journal
IV. Question What words of wisdom would you offer your younger self?
V. This Week, I Will Lead myself. Lean into gratitude. Practice habits that bring peace. Protect and nourish my inner child. Focus on the process, not the product.
"At some point when things go downhill, you must ask yourself: "Is this how I want to continue to live?" And in that moment, you must make a choice. You must choose what thoughts you want to think and which ones you no longer want to feed. You must choose what to focus your energy on and what to take your attention off of. You must choose which people you want to surround yourself with and who you need to walk away from. You must choose what feelings you want to experience and what emotions you want to detach from. Take a step back and observe the way you're currently living. Notice how your current choices, thoughts and emotions are affecting your reality. Because at every present moment, you have opportunity to choose differently. Do you want your future to be more of the same, or can you rediscover a new life for yourself?"
