M-STEP Results: What Berkley School District Families Can Expect
M-STEP Results: What Berkley School District Families Can Expect
This past spring, many Berkley Schools students took one of Michigan’s summative statewide tests. Students in grades 3-7 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Students in grade 8 took the PSAT 8/9 (for English language arts and mathematics) and the M-STEP (for science and social studies). Students in grade 11 took the MME (Michigan Merit Exam). Berkley Schools received student results from the M-STEP, PSAT 8/9, and MME in late August. Over the next few days, we expect families to receive their child’s test scores in the mail from the Michigan Department of Education.
The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s high standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. For older students, the PSAT, SAT, and WorkKeys components also measure students’ readiness for success in college and careers.
While looking at your child’s test scores, we encourage you to remember that state standardized test scores are just one measure of student progress. They certainly don’t tell the whole story of your child’s learning. We also collect data in the classroom and through the NWEA test three times a year, and share that with you. It’s also important to remember all of our students have lived through varying educational experiences over the last two and a half years.
Berkley Schools will spend time reviewing this year’s M-STEP, PSAT, and MME results to find where we are having success, and where we see areas in which to improve. The test results will also reveal which groups of students are doing well, and which students may need more or different kinds of support in their learning.
The Michigan Department of Education has developed several useful documents that are available for download:
If you have further questions, please feel free to contact your school principal or me at any time.

Thank You for following the PLAN
Here are a few areas we can work on:
1. Please do not try and drop off your child on the far side of the street, have them open the car door into traffic and try and dart across the street. They need to exit on the passenger side in a parking spot and walk to the corner and cross with the crossing guard.
2. You all know I am a huge dog lover so this one is hard even for me. Please refrain from bringing your four legged BFF on to school property. I have many children afraid of dogs and when they (the dogs) are excited to see the children and other dogs it makes for an unhealthy experience for the children to deal with.
3. It is not necessary for you to bring forgotten water bottles to school for your child. We have solo cups for them to have or they can now just take sips from the refrigerated water fountains.
Thank you for your assistance with these items.
