February Newsletter 2019
D.W. Daniel High School
A Message from Mrs. Sharkey
I hope everyone has had a great start to the new year. Although it is only February, we are already planning for the courses that we will offer during the 2019-2020 school year. We offer a wide variety of courses in every subject area. If you take a look at the course selection pages, you will see some new courses that will be offered at Daniel this coming school year! I am confident that all students will be able to find courses that interest them and prepare them for success later in life. During the month, we will be working with our students to help them pick out courses that align with their post-secondary plans. Your child will be bringing home a course selection form so that you can have course planning conversations before meeting with his or her advisor. It is my belief that time spent researching courses and choosing courses that best match a post-secondary plan is one of the most beneficial things we can offer our students. We are looking forward to our parent nights and IGP conference nights when we will be able to answer any questions you might have concerning course selections.
Every day at Daniel is an exciting day! We are focusing on the present and preparing for the future. We are proud of our students. Go Lions!
A Message from Nurse Roy and Nurse Duncan
Flu season is upon us and in full swing.
When does my child need to stay home?
Temperature of 100° or higher with cough and/or sore throat, body aches, headache, fatigue (feeling very tired with no reason), vomiting or diarrhea (this is more common in children than adults with the flu illness).
*It is important to remember that not everyone with the flu will have a fever. Not everyone with the above symptoms will have the flu, but may not feel well enough to be at school.*
How long does my child need to stay home?
Before returning to school, students need to be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (Advil, Tylenol, etc.) for 24 hours. If your child’s physician has written a note for your child to be absent from school, then he or she needs to remain out of school for the full period of time the physician has requested.
*You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.*
If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Roy and Nurse Duncan in the health room.

State Testing Reminders
All Juniors and other 3rd year high school students have the opportunity to take either the ACT (on February 20) or the SAT (on March 6) for free during the regular school day.
All 10th graders will take the PreACT on February 20. The PreACT helps assess your child’s college readiness and helps to guide your child in preparation for future college entrance tests. The PreACT is free of charge and will be administered during the regular school day.
United Way Campaign
Daniel's Ute Turner was honored for her work with the District's annual United Way campaign. The entire school district raised more than $44,000 for charity this year. Mrs. Turner and Principal Shannon Sharkey were on hand to accept an "Outstanding Campaign Award." United Way representative, Jennifer Shurley, is pictured with Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Sharkey in the image below.
The money raised locally is spent locally, with the Camp iRock reading program being one of the main recipients. This partnership of the United Way with both the School District of Pickens County and the Pickens County YMCA works with elementary school students to provide additional reading instruction over the summer. Thank you to Mrs. Turner and to everyone who donated.
