Weekly Article: "Ask Me About..."
Each week the grade level teams will publish two to three statements for caregivers to use as conversation starters with their child(ren). Although the Scoop is a great place to see and discuss end-of-learning products, these "ask me about" conversation starters will help promote discussions about current learning. Art Room Update
Over the past 2 weeks students have been exploring the 3 dimensional form of Sculpture.
We began the unit playing the game SCULPTAPALOOZA with modeling clay. Students drew cards from a deck in groups of 4 and had to create the items listed on cards. This game gave students a opportunity to work cooperatively, create a variety of objects, building with speed and ways of sharing and discussing individual and peer work. We followed up this week with each grade level working with various materials building their own permanent sculptures. Grades Kand 1 have created playground models with paper. Grade 2 has made 3D forms with straws and pipe cleaners. Grade 3 is building people in action with pipe cleaners and grade 4 is making abstract sculptures with cardboard. We hope to have our work on display when classes complete their work.
Kindergarten News:
We finished our fifth Magic Tree House book this week. We really have enjoyed exploring the Japanese culture, learning about Ninjas and reading about Jack and Annie's adventures to help save Morgan Le Fay.
We are learning new sight words and word patterns. We are practicing spelling words with the correct vowels, digraphs and blends.
We are learning about shapes. We began this week learning about 2D (flat) shapes and we identified the sides and vertices (corners) of each shape. We are practicing describing the differences and similarities between the shapes. We are also practicing building shapes with other shapes.
Happy 100th day of School! Grade 1 celebrates!
PreK News:
We have filled our seventh shark jar. Our class voted on make your own pizza. That is what we will be doing today.
In the classroom, we have continued our Nursery Rhyme theme. Today we will participate in number bingo with Baa Baa Black Sheep. At the art table, we will watercolor different Nursery Rhymes. At the second academic table, we will sequence The Itsy-Bitsy Spider story.
Science Club News:
Students investigated the science behind a simple acid-base reaction. Knowing that oil and water do not mix, we added Alka-Seltzer which is both acidic and basic. These tablets contained sodium bicarbonate (a base) and citric acid (an acid). When we placed the tablet in the oil and water, it produced bubbly carbon dioxide!
