STUDENT ID BADGES
Our ID badge program is up and running for most of our students. We are currently working with Lifetouch to ensure that all students have a badge for school and their backpack. Please visit www.zpassplus.com to register in parent portal. This will allow you to know when and where your student enters and exits the bus. Please remind your student to treat their badges kindly as replacement badges/lanyards are $5.
TRANSPORTATION
For safety reasons, no students may be dropped off or picked up by car from anywhere other than the front car rider line. Please do not turn left or go straight onto Jackrabbit when leaving the parking lot. Right turns only in the afternoon please. Please stay on the right so that day care vans can pass on the left. We load these vehicles in a separate area from the car riders because it takes longer to load so many students at one time.
DRESS CODE REMINDERS
Our school has standardized dress.
*Shirts: Solid primary Red, White or Navy Blue
*Bottoms: Khaki, Navy, Blue denim or Black
*Jackets: Solid Primary Red, White, Navy or Black
A copy of the complete dress code is available in the front office or on our website.
JACKRABBIT SPIRIT DAYS
Fridays are spirit days at Owens. To show support for our school, your child may wear an Owen’s spirit shirt or an Owens’ shirt from previous Family Fun Run and Carnival or field day events. We also encourage students to wear their college shirts.
LUNCH RULES
This is a reminder to all parents and students that food may not be shared between students. Texas law limits the kinds of food that may be given to students at school. Also, some students have food allergies or other diet restrictions.
Every student should be reminded that their lunch is for them to eat-not to trade or share with friends. Also, parents may not bring lunch to school for anyone other than their own child.
When bringing lunch to school, on Wednesdays and Fridays only, parents must sign in and deliver the lunch to their student in the cafeteria. The office staff cannot deliver lunches or snacks to students.
MORNING ARRIVAL
We open our front doors at 8:15 AM. If you drop your child off before 8:15 AM, there will be no supervision. Students are allowed to enter the building at 8:15a.m ONLY IF an adult is on duty. Instruction begins at 8:45. Please help us begin instruction on time by allowing your child to ride the school bus or by dropping them off in time to walk to class and be in their seat ready to learn by 8:45.Students who are car riders and walkers/bikers who arrive after 8:45 will be counted tardy. Students who are tardy must be brought into the building by an adult to be signed in.
FROM THE CAFETERIA
Students who received free or reduced price lunch at the end of last year will temporarily remain on the program until October 9, 2018. All money left in lunch accounts at the end of last year transferred over to this school year. Accounts with negative balances were also carried over to this year, so please see that your child’s account is current. If your child transferred from any Cy-Fair school the positive or negative balance followed to Owens. If you leave the district, you can request a refund by calling the school cafeteria at 281-463-5920 before your child's last day of classes at Owens.
Note: No money can be given to students. An adult will need to come to the cafeteria to receive any refund.
Also, please remember that if your child is on free or reduced lunch and goes to any Cy-Fair school, he or she will remain on the program for the first 30 days of school next year. You will need to re-apply over the summer or at the beginning of the next school year for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year.
FROM THE CLINIC
Parents,
Vision, Hearing, Acanthosis Nigricans & Spinal Screenings will be conducted on Oct. 10th & Oct. 11th. Children in pre-k, kindergarten, first, third and fifth grades will be screened for vision and hearing. If your child wears glasses or contacts, please be sure they have them on that day. In addition, all first, third and fifth graders will be screened for Acanthosis Nigricans (a marker for diabetes risk). Fifth graders will be screened for scoliosis. It is best if your child wears a T-shirt on screening day so I can clearly see their back bone structure.
Thank you!
Tania Gaubert, RN
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
September's tip is:
What Is Positive Discipline?
As a parent you have a big job. You're the one who helps your children grow up to feel a sense of belonging and connection to the family. You teach your children social and life skills. You help your children feel loved. You find ways to ensure that your children feel special, unique, and important. You keep children safe.
Positive Discipline is about instructing, educating, preparing, training, regulating, skill building, and focusing on solutions. With Positive Discipline, the emphasis is on balance of firmness and kindness, and on providing respect for both adults and children. Positive Discipline, because it is neither permissive nor punitive, brings hope, increased skills, and love to your family.
The Core Essential big idea for September is Initiative: Seeing what needs to be done and doing it.
Ways to practice initiative at home:

INDIVIDUAL PICTURE DAY
Individual pictures will be taken on October 18, 2018. On this day, students do not need to follow the Owens standardized dress code, but must still follow the district dress code guidelines. Money envelopes with information about the portrait packages will be sent home. The photographer will not accept late orders or money after picture day. All students will have their pictures taken because these pictures are also used for our school yearbook. Only students who bring money for their pictures will have their portraits sent home when they are complete.
