2019 Local Government Seminar
Every day, local government touches the lives of North Carolinians and provides the services essential for functional communities, growing businesses, and healthy families. It is local government that supplies water to our faucets, collects our trash, moves traffic through our downtowns, and cuts the grass in our parks and ball fields. It is also local government that delivers care and counseling to those facing difficult times and responds with qualified personnel to life’s emergencies.
Participants in this seminar will learn first-hand the role of local government in North Carolina and then explore pedagogical strategies for teaching young people about how local government in North Carolina works. Highlights of the Seminar will include: meeting with elected and appointed local government officials, “behind-the-scenes” field trips of various county and city departments, and MORE!! Great Ideas and Shared Resources
General Idea:
Movie Poster and Voiceover for a formative/summative assessment of student learning. Thanks to Heather Rawlings at North for finding and using the idea.
Uniwatch Create a Sports Uniform for a person/event in history. The SS Department discovered this idea earlier this month. There has already been an activity developed for AM2 using this idea (see below).
Civics/Economics:
270 to Win is a website teachers and students can use to examine "what ifs" and "what happened" regarding various elections. This one was spotted being used in Kendall Fields' classroom at Parkland.
Crazy Laws is an activity created by Lee Miller at Reagan. He mentioned that the students had a lot of fun with this and wanted to share it with others.
American 1:
Jackson's Presidency is a PDF gem that Ana Kirby at Reagan found and wanted to share. It looks at the political and economic components of Jackson's office.
American 2:
1920s SAS Curriculum Pathways is an activity that Jermay Ray at Parkland was using with his students. The linked document is a graphic organizer for students to use with the SAS activity so students can put the information together and reflect on their learning once the activity is complete.
New Deal Uniforms is a new activity that the SS Department came across this month. It was shared at the Core Academy session last week and Carter Fontaine of Walkertown developed an activity using the idea for the New Deal. The see what the activity could look like when it is finished click here.
World History
Last year Anne Proctor from North helped design a digital breakout box that goes with this unit. Here is the folder. These are the teacher directions, the student worksheet, and the starting page for students. The breakout box reviews the Renaissance and Reformation and teaches about the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment. It takes about two days (maybe less) to complete. If you would like to use it but need help, contact Melissa.

American History 1
We are knee deep into Unit 4. As you prepare for the unit assessment, remember there are questions already developed for the unit. You can even copy the assessment right into your PSL/Haiku class. To do this go to the PSL/Haiku Library (tab at the top of the page) and search for AM1. Click on the Unit 4 Assessment and add it to your class.
There is a digital break out box that was designed with the help of Alexis Callender from East that can be used to review the reforms in this unit. Here is the folder. These are the teacher directions, the student worksheet, and the first page for students. If you would like to use this but need help contact Melissa.
American History 2
Remember, there are multiple choice questions developed and ready to use for this unit.
Message from Melissa
Last week, I noticed some panic going on as people began to realize that there are, essentially, only 8 weeks of teaching left before exams officially begin. Be thoughtful with your time. If you need help figuring out what to do, please let me know. I knew, going into this semester, this realization would hit many of you like a brick. It is ok and we will all be fine. As Dory says, just keep swimming.
We only have two more Monday's before Spring Break. You are all exhausted. The kids are getting Spring Fever. Seniors have one foot out the door and are barely hanging in there. But, we are going to be alright and ... just keep swimming. (I know some of you are sing-songing that phrase.)
I hope everyone has a great week; the last week of March.
Here is to April!
