A Message from Mr. Olds

Welcome back to all. Students have been wide awake and ready to learn all week long. Grades have been finalized and grade cards will come home today. Please take a moment to look over grades with your student. We want them to be more responsible and take accountability for their learning. We will continue to embrace the differences in learning styles and support ways to enrich each and every student.

As we begin the new semester, it is important for middle schoolers to get off to a good start and finish the year strong. We wanted to address some social media issues/concerns and digital citizenship to our students. We have a presenter coming in during academic assist to speak talk about branding and social media. The speaker is Scott Grant, President and Chief Impact Officer of Triple Threat Leadership. He has presented to our high schoolers and also did a parent session about two months ago. He is a dynamic speaker with a phenomenal message. They should come home talking about what they learned today, so be on the lookout for this conversation.

As always, we will continue to foster an environment conducive for all students to learn. Thank you for allowing us to work with them. Have a wonderful weekend.

Congratulations to those students that made 1st quarter honor roll! Keep up the great work!

Often times parents will inquire about the formula for GPA calculations, so I have shared the formula below. While the computer calculates all the GPA's you can use this formula to calculate a GPA by hand.

Sum of (grades multiplied by credits) divided by the sum of credits

Full-Year Course=1

Semester-Length Course=.5 (Physical Education=.25)

For example, if John Doe hypothetically has the following grades: LA=A, Math=B, Science=C, Social Studies=D, Art=F, Chorus=A, FCS=B, Phys Ed=A. The formula to calculate John Doe's grades would look like this:

Sum of grades x credits (4x1+3x1+2x1+1x1+0x.5+4x.5+3x.5+4x.25=14.5) / sum of credits (1+1+1+1+.5+.5+.5+.25=5.75) = 2.52 GPA

Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Fryling (dfryling@otsegoknights.org) if you have any questions about honor roll or GPA.

We are very excited to announce that Senior Chief Edward C. Byers Jr. will be coming back to Otsego to talk to the community and our students!

Otsego Local Schools will be hosting a Town Hall Q & A forum featuring Senior Chief Edward C. Byers Jr. on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Chief Byers was a 1997 graduate of Otsego High School and is a member of the U.S. Navy.

We would love to have a large representation from the Otsego Community attend this special event. We would greatly appreciate it if you could please help spread the word. I have also sent a letter to every church and post office in the community. There will also be something in the Sentinel.

Please note: There is absolutely NO video allowed during the community presentation.

There will be a couple other events on Friday that will be for our students only, but I wanted to share with everyone what they are.

We will be having a character development/motivational assembly with Chief Byers on Friday, February 3rd with our JH and HS students. In the afternoon, Chief Byers will be taping two segments on the stage of the auditorium with WBGU-TV hosted by Otsego's own Steve Kendall.

The Otsego Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 in between the JV and Varsity Basketball Game at Otsego High School. The Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals who have brought honor to themselves by making significant impacts or contributions to the school, community, or students. The Otsego Hall of Fame also exists for all alumni who have earned distinction beyond graduation. These individuals have made noteworthy achievements as successful adults in their chosen careers and/or have served as benefactors of mankind. The Otsego Hall of Fame also recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Otsego Local Schools as a staff member, coach, or friend of Otsego.
