A Message from Mr. Olds
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome back to all. Students have been wide awake and ready to learn all week long. Grades have been finalized and grade cards will come home today. Please take a moment to look over grades with your student. We want them to be more responsible and take accountability for their learning. We will continue to embrace the differences in learning styles and support ways to enrich each and every student.
As we begin the new semester, it is important for middle schoolers to get off to a good start and finish the year strong. We wanted to address some social media issues/concerns and digital citizenship to our students. We have a presenter coming in during academic assist to speak talk about branding and social media. The speaker is Scott Grant, President and Chief Impact Officer of Triple Threat Leadership. He has presented to our high schoolers and also did a parent session about two months ago. He is a dynamic speaker with a phenomenal message. They should come home talking about what they learned today, so be on the lookout for this conversation.
As always, we will continue to foster an environment conducive for all students to learn. Thank you for allowing us to work with them. Have a wonderful weekend.
2nd QUARTER HONOR ROLL
Congratulations to those students that made 1st quarter honor roll! Keep up the great work!
Often times parents will inquire about the formula for GPA calculations, so I have shared the formula below. While the computer calculates all the GPA's you can use this formula to calculate a GPA by hand.
Sum of (grades multiplied by credits) divided by the sum of credits
Grades:
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0
Credits:
Full-Year Course=1
Semester-Length Course=.5 (Physical Education=.25)
For example, if John Doe hypothetically has the following grades: LA=A, Math=B, Science=C, Social Studies=D, Art=F, Chorus=A, FCS=B, Phys Ed=A. The formula to calculate John Doe's grades would look like this:
Sum of grades x credits (4x1+3x1+2x1+1x1+0x.5+4x.5+3x.5+4x.25=14.5) / sum of credits (1+1+1+1+.5+.5+.5+.25=5.75) = 2.52 GPA
Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Fryling (dfryling@otsegoknights.org) if you have any questions about honor roll or GPA.
