Inaugural Edition of Academy News

It would be hard to write a better script than WEEK ONE of the second semester of the 2015 - 2016. Yes, you are ready to meet children with desks and chairs and clean rooms (thanks to the awesome facility members of your teams), yes, students feel welcome and prepared, (thanks principals and teachers).

The Academy staff would like welcomes a new year and a new semester! We are excited and ready to offer you a wealth of leadership opportunities. There were many great leadership development offerings in the fall semester and we are looking ahead to even more great learning experiences for administrators in Dallas ISD.

Besides making new year resolutions, this is also the time that we reflect on the last semester experiences and look forward to the next months on our campuses. The Academy staff would like to share some tips for the second semester.

Don't be boring!

This sounds strange but it can quickly begin to happen to all of us. When the second semester rolls around, we realize that we just want to get through the next five months and then we are home free until August. We get the urge to buckle down and get to work on the areas we need to improve from the first semester. You know ... you start looking (and making changes) to instructional schedules, testing, PLCs, systems, budgets, improvement plans, etc. We think that this will make the summer come sooner - this is sometimes not the best strategy.

Don't give up everything because it is the second semester. Get out and do things that will make you more productive. Otherwise, you will burn yourself out. Find professional development activities or opportunities to meet with your peers. Whatever is happening in your building will take up much of your time but going to a PD session, participating in webinar, or meeting colleagues after work will give you a much needed break from the routine business of school.

Take a little bit at a time

Set goals for yourself and reward yourself and your staff every time you achieve one. For example, if your goal was to improve staff attendance, celebrate each month during the faculty meeting with the staff. By celebrating little things, you are building a culture of success in your school. You are slowly building to the big wins.

Take care of yourself

It's a known fact that lack of sunlight can fuel depression and makes us all a little more grumpy in the winter. One way to combat this is to make sure that you're taking care of your body. This will also motivate us throughout the second semester.

Make sure you get enough rest (we know that this is hard, but do the best you can!) One way to way to do this is walk your building and grounds every morning (or when you can). This gives you an opportunity to check out the building while you are some movement in your day. Another idea (we got this from some Dallas ISD administrators) offer a Zumba class or aerobics or dance class a couple days a week for the staff and yourself. Remember to eat healthy and drink lots of water.

Don't look at the next five months and groan! Think about how much you can learn between now and then!
