NGSS AND NEW SUPERVISOR WORKSHOPS

On Tuesday, April 19th we held workshops at NJPSA in Monroe for our members. This is part of our initiative to foster more collaboration within our membership. The topics this time around were "Leading Curriculum Change in the NGSS" and "Emerging Leadership". Both attendees and presenters learned a lot from the experience! Some of the materials and slides can be accessed in our shared folder here.

Thank you to Meegan Adames, Kim Feltre, and Brian Carey for being excellent facilitators of these events. If you have ideas or suggestions for future events please pass them along!

Our next member workshop will be on May 19th and the topic is Chemicals!

SCIENCE EDUCATION SHORT COURSES

Mike Heinz has asked that this be passed along to our membership:

The Office of Secondary Education is pleased to announce the availability of two free on-line Science Education Short Courses. The Institute for Science + Math Education at the University of Washington is producing a series of "Short Courses," acting as resource guides through a particular topic. Short Courses incorporate STEM Teaching Tools, other resources created by our team, and helpful tools created by outside sources. The courses can be explored individually or in a group setting, such as a departmental professional learning community or a day of professional development. The first two short courses focus on formative assessment and how to adapt curriculum materials to meet the demands of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science.

· SHORT COURSE: How to Develop 3D Formative Assessments for the Science Classroom

· SHORT COURSE: How to use Curriculum Adaptation to Adopt the New Vision for Science Education

Questions regarding the short courses should be sent to michael.heinz@doe.state.nj.us.

NGSS SEARCH TOOL

Common Sense Education has developed a search tool to help teachers find NGSS resources relating to specific perfomance expectations. You can find the tool here: https://www.graphite.org/standards/next-generation-science-standards

A story about it appeared on eSchool News:

"The NGSS Explorer, from the nonprofit Common Sense Education, helps teachers locate the ed-tech resources that can help give students a cross-disciplinary, inquiry-based approach to science learning. The tool also is intended to help teachers integrate new tools into their lesson plans."
