A message from the principal
Dayton Families,
Spring can be a busy time in school and outside of school. In school we often have special events like music concerts, special projects, and the Dayton Olympics. As you’ve likely heard by now, this year we’re also excited to offer the Boosterthon Fun Run on this special day. Thank you to our PTO for organizing this fundraiser and fun opportunity for our students and school community. We hope you can come cheer on your students in the Olympics and the Fun Run. Click here for the Dayton Olympic Schedule.
New this year, we’re encouraging all children to follow their regular dismissal procedures at the end of the day. By having students go home their regular way (by bus, or parent pick-up lane, etc.), classrooms are able to have a whole class celebration together at the end of the day. By following regular dismissal procedures, we are also able to eliminate some of the long lines, and busyness that can accompany over 700 families trying to safely sign-out their children at once. While we recognize there may be some unique circumstances on this day for your family, we strongly ask that you consider sending your child home their regular way. Thank you for helping us make this a fun and safe day.
During the month of May, our students are learning about creativity. Character Strong defines creativity as using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem.
Learn more about how to support conversations about courage in your home with these resources.
Also in May, we are excited to offer some special virtual workshops for families through our licensed parenting support educator, Ms. Dubar-Kollie. Please review the Parent Education and Family Engagement section for more information about these three sessions, which include: Promoting Digital Citizenship, Helping Young Children Become Anti-Racist and Anti-Bias and Mental and Emotional Well-Being. We hope you can take advantage of these opportunities.
Thank you for your continued partnership.

Mental and Emotional Well-being

April Specialists Highlights
Art
Project Highlight: Kindergarten Spring Flower Garden
This trimester, Kindergarteners are exploring the element of art color. They are learning about the primary and secondary colors, warm and cool colors, and how color choices affect an artwork. In this project, students demonstrated their understanding of warm and cool colors and carefully designed flowers, stems, and leaves to create their garden.
Core
During the month of May students will be “putting it all together”. Students will research a subject using e-resources, create google docs, slides, drawings, and/or sheets to share their knowledge with their classmates. Students will use skills previously learned to create and share a new project. I look forward to seeing their presentations.
Explorations
Kindergartners have been studying red worms and earthworms and will now add isopods (pill bugs and sow bugs) to their discovery of animals. First graders have been studying mealworms and will also investigate milkweed bugs, learning about complete and simple metamorphoses in the process. Second graders will be learning about plants to end the year. Third graders are studying plant structures of life, studying different seeds and how they grow in different substrates. Fourth graders are finishing up geography and will be learning about the United States and doing a project on a state. Fifth graders continue to learn about the founding of the United States government, the three branches, checks and balances, and protections we have.
