A Message From Our Administrative Team
On behalf of the faculty and staff at Longfellow Elementary School, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the opportunity to work with your students. With a strong partnership between home and school, we are able to continuously build strong learners and well-rounded young people. During this time of year, we take time to reflect on all that we are grateful for. Many families have recently taken the opportunity to visit LoES classrooms to observe instruction and talk with teachers about what their students have accomplished through the first quarter of the 2017-2018 school year. Our constant goal is to continue supporting students so that they can continue to grow.
As we move into an extended break from school, we hope everyone has an opportunity to rest, relax and spend quality time with family and loved ones. Students will return to school on Monday, November 27th. That week will also mark the beginning of our annual Scholastic Book Fair. Please take a moment to refer to the additional upcoming dates listed below and we look forward to seeing you at the next school event.
Happy Thanksgiving,
LoES Administrative Team

- Attendance Area Update - The Howard County Board of Education has revised Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) elementary and middle school attendance areas for the 2018-2019 school year. The adjustments are needed to populate new Elementary School #42, scheduled to open in Hanover in fall 2018, and to realign middle school feeder patterns in conjunction with the elementary attendance areas. The final decision was made during the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting on November 16, 2017. You can get additional information at hcpss.org.
- Superintendent Characteristics Survey - The Howard County Board of Education is seeking public input as it moves forward with the process of selecting a permanent superintendent, who will be appointed to a four-year term to commence on July 1, 2018. Community members are invited to submit desired leadership characteristics and priorities by completing a survey. The survey responses will be shared with the Board of Education and will inform the superintendent search process.
The Board of Education will host two forums for the public to attend and provide direct input on the superintendent search process. These forums will be held on:
December 5, 2017 from 7-8 p.m. at Wilde Lake Middle School, 10481 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia, MD 21044
- CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) - CogAT is a reasoning and problem-solving test used by HCPSS to help identify students for gifted and talented programs. The test includes a verbal battery, quantitative battery, and nonverbal battery. Longfellow will administer CogAT for Third and Fifth Grades on December 3, 4, and 5 at 9:05 a.m. Results for the test will be available in February 2018. If you have any questions please contact Ms. Wright.
- Early Dismissal for Students - please note that parents looking to sign out their student(s) for early dismissal should do so before 3:10 pm (as noted in the Student Agenda Books). After this time teachers and staff throughout the building prepare for dismissal by having students pack up, transition to homeroom classes and confirm after school activities. Our regular dismissal procedures begin at 3:18 pm as bus riders, walkers, car riders and students in after care begin to transition through and exit the building.
