Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning September 5
Dear Parents and Staff
Recently I submitted an application for funding from Catholic Education WA to attend a Pilgrimage in Ireland which explores the life of Nano Nagle and the establishment of the Presentation Order of Sisters. Whilst the Charism of both of our founding Orders is very important to me and our school, I was challenged to consider why this would be so. Below is part of my submission:
Our Catholic identity is critical as an underpinning motivator for all that we do in our schools. The founding Orders of our schools provide us with a rich history and, for those of us who embrace the charism, a guiding hand (or a lantern as Nano Nagle would have used) to direct us into the future. As the Mandate of the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia states:
“For a school to be Catholic, it must first be a good school…the Catholic school’s concept of education will be:
…the development of (students) from within, freeing them from that conditioning that would prevent them from becoming fully integrated human beings. The school must begin from the principle that its educational program is intentionally directed to the growth of the whole person.”
By embracing the charisms of our founding Orders we are providing an excellent foundation for our students to become fully integrated human beings and I believe that the opportunity to be immersed in the Presentation and Mercy traditions at their roots will help to make me a better leader in passing on the ethos that motivated our founders.
As we celebrate the work of the Presentation Sisters and the life of their Foundress, Nano Nagle, tomorrow, I hope that, in amongst all of the food and fun associated with this great day, we don’t lose sight of the wonderful work that was done by the Sisters in establishing our school and laying the moral foundations that we continue to follow.
As part of our celebration tomorrow children and staff are invited to wear neat casual clothes. For a $5.00 donation they will receive a cupcake or slice for morning tea, a sausage sizzle and drink for lunch and participation in all of the organized mini-fete activities. The donation will be passed on to the Presentation Sisters to assist them in their missionary work.
SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter our school is conducting this Survey to assist us in future planning and decision making. I encourage all families to follow the link below to access the Survey so that we are aware of how parents perceive our school is progressing so that we are able to make decisions for the future based upon these.

ATHLETICS
I hope we continue to have fine weather next week for our Senior Field Events and 400m races. Brett Webb has forwarded information regarding which classes are participating on each of the days but a copy of this has been included later in the newsletter for reference. Please note that the Field Events are for children from Years Three to Six and the 400m races are for children in Years Four to Six. I wish all competitors the best of luck with their performances and look forward to seeing parents as they support their children on their respective event days.
P&F COCKTAIL EVENING
During the past five years whilst I have been at our school the P&F has been an outstanding support for so many of the initiatives that we have implemented.
Some of the initiatives that they have assisted with are:
- upgrades to the school library and canteen
- funding of the Nature Playground
- provided robotics and other resources for our Makerspace programme
- fitted the glass partition doors between each of the classrooms
- supported the erection of our Mercy and Presentation Crosses in the Mother Mary Piazza
- supported the Year Six Graduation celebrations
- provided a wide range of resources for the classes and
- provided numerous free events such as Discos and the Dads’ and Kids Campout
At a recent meeting of the P&F, Board and School Leadership Team I have asked the P&F to take on the task of upgrading the surface of our tennis courts. The quotes that we have received thus far indicate that this will cost around $35,000.
To work towards raising this the P&F is considering a few fundraising events, the first of which is the Cocktail Evening planned for 19 October. There are only 200 tickets available for this event with entry, a live band and finger food throughout the evening included in the ticket price. To date about half of the tickets have been sold so I encourage parents to get together a group and come along to support this initiative that will benefit all of the children. Please see the P&F flyer for further details.
P&F COCKTAIL PARTY
Tickets are now available for this great evening to be held on 19 October at Forster Park on Abernethy Rd. Due to the size of the venue there are only 200 tickets so go online to ensure you don’t miss out.

PRE PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
Term Three has so far been a very busy time in Pre-Primary.
We have been reading many interesting big books this term. One of our favourites was Roy G Biv. This story was based on the colours of the rainbow and we had lots of fun completing various craft and painting activities based on the book. We have also been learning lots of new high frequency words and word families this term too.
In Mathematics we have been busy continuing to learn lots of new and exciting things. We have even started to tell the time and have started learning to count backwards. We really are learning so many new things each week.
We have also been very busy learning about Asia. So far this term we have learnt interesting facts about India and Vietnam. We have also been lucky enough to make rice paper rolls and even make a lovely Indian curry. It has been a great experience trying different foods from different countries.
We have been busy preparing our Father’s Day gifts over the last few weeks and we enjoyed celebrating this special day with our amazing Dads on the weekend.
Both PPM and PPP have had their assembly this term and we enjoyed our first experience on the stage in front of the whole school. We are looking forward to participating in our very first EDU Dance concert in a few weeks’ time.
We are looking forward to all the interesting and fun things planned for the rest of Term Three.

WASTEWISE WARRIORS READY TO SELL WORM WEE!
At Notre Dame we promote sustainability. It is such an important message for our students to learn. Some months ago, the Year Five students started a worm farm with Mrs Jennings. This has been established in an old bath tub (kindly donated by the Hindmarsh family) around the side of the school, behind the library. Thank you also to Mr Caridi for his creativity and handyman skills in installing it. Each classroom has been given a designated bucket for the children to collect their vegetable and fruit scraps daily. Students have learned what scraps can be collected and what can’t.
Twice a week, the Year Five students collect the scrap buckets and feed them to the worms. We collect so many scraps we have been able to start a second worm farm (also donated by the Hindmarsh family). The children are learning about being wastewise and how to deal with waste more sustainably by establishing a worm farm. They are also learning about what can be produced from it - castings and worm wee! Some of the produce from the worm farm is being used on the school vegetable garden, but we have more than we need! Therefore, the Year 6 Environment Council will be selling worm wee to the school community at a bargain price of $2 for a 2L (recycled) bottle. All proceeds will go back into the sustainability program at Notre Dame.
Stay tuned for further information of when and where you can purchase this “liquid gold”.

But, we can’t control the behaviour of others, and we can’t keep our kids locked away for their entire childhoods. So, what do we do? How do we keep our children safe?
Holly-ann Martin of Safe4Kids has been working in the field of child abuse prevention education for many years and has come to a pretty simple conclusion in this time: EDUCATION.
