Lee's Summit Parents as Teachers

April 2020

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

Parents as Teachers celebrates 35 years of building strong communities, thriving families and children that are healthy, safe and ready to learn.

Parents as Teachers is here for you

What an unprecedented time we are in - it is both challenging and upsetting, taxing and abnormal. Routines have changed, lifestyles are being adjusted. But...we've always known parents are their child's first and most important teacher and we want to make sure our LSR-7 parents of young children have the tools they need. Your parent educator is adapting her home visits so she can continue to meet with you virtually. Please be sure to check out our webpage and look for us on Facebook and twitter. You will be able to find updated resources and past newletters for additional ideas for you and your family. See our website at http://pat.lsr7.net

Your time connecting and playing with your little one is literally building their brain. We know this may be a stressful time for your family, please know that you do not need to sit them down and "do preschool", just play, talk and read together....they will shine in your presence.

What do I share with my child?

There is a lot of information out there and your children ask lots of questions. Knowing what to share and how much is up to you. The following is some information from PBS Kids (For Parents) with the following 3 tips:

  • Take cues from their questions to share age-appropriate facts.
  • Reassure them they are safe.
  • Share the simple things they can do to be "germ-busters".*

A kindness tree idea from our parent educators

We have been using this activity with families and thought that other families might enjoy trying this. The Kindness Tree is one that you can hang up in a couple places also. Everyone in the family can participate and point out when someone has shown kindness and write their name on a heart and place on the tree. This is a really powerful tool to help us focus on the desired behavior we want.

Ready Bodies, Learning Minds: some activities to get up and moving

This video shows few simple exercises to try with your child. Start with one and go from there! Maybe get the whole family involved, but don't be surprised if these are hard for your little one. It doesn't have to be perfect, just have fun!

We know this is hard.

Parents as Teachers has always known you are your child's first and most important teacher. Routines are out the window, work is done from home for most and juggling everything makes it harder. We want you to know that we are still here for you. We are here to support you, provide resources, and help with strategies. We love Conscious Discipline which focuses on self regulation and connections.
