Principal's Message

Dear North Gresham Families,

As we see Covid-19 cases rise across the county, and are well into the cold and flu season, I want to encourage our families to continue to make the health and safety of all a priority.

How can you help?

  • Keep your child home when sick, regardless of whether it's Covid-related or not. We still exclude for symptoms such as: a fever of 100.5 or greater, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, etc. If you're unsure if your student's symptoms are excludable, please keep your student home as a precaution and call the office for further direction.
  • If your student or anyone in your household has a pending Covid-19 test, we encourage you to keep your student home until you get the results. This will reduce the spread to others at school in case the results are positive.
  • If anyone in your household tests positive, please keep your student home even if they test negative, or aren't showing any symptoms and contact the school.

We work closely with MESD to track illnesses and obtain return dates according to county health guidelines. Please be patient when waiting to hear back about your student's return date. With the rise in cases and illnesses, our MESD team's caseload has significantly increased and processing times are delayed.

Guidelines change rapidly. When there are changes that affect our families, we will notify you as soon as possible. Thank you again for your continued support and flexibility as we navigate this challenging time together. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of our families to keep our staff and students healthy and safe!

Sincerely,

Shawnda Sewell

Principal

What's Going On In 4th Grade?

Our North Star 4th graders are working on many things. Multiple digit multiplication, citing text evidence for stories, books and lessons on Mars, Flocabulary, and tear art snowmen. Ask your 4th grader to tell you all about what they're learning!

We are very proud of all of the hard work and progress our 4th graders are making!

Sincerely,

Ms. Alexander-Blake, Mrs. Daniels, and Mr. Keo

Student Drop-Off & Safety Reminders

Parents who drop their children off at school:

  • Doors open at 8:15 AM across the district, but we have had staff outside between 8:05-8:10 AM, allowing drop off early. Due to staff shortages, do not let your student out of the car until 8:15 AM. This will ensure we have enough adults at duty.
  • Please make sure to pull forward to the flag pole or vehicles are stopped before letting your child out of the car.

Safety Note: Pulling around cars is an extreme safety issue, as some students exit on the passenger side. Please wait until cars pull forward to exit the parking lot. Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of all!

Inclement Weather & Emergency School Closure Information

In the event of a school closure due to inclement weather, please make sure you are signed up for our district's SchoolMessenger system. You can opt-in by texting "Y" or "YES" to 67587. You will receive messages to your phone. You can also download the app by visiting the website here: https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/home.

If school closes early while students are already here, we will send a message to families to notify you of the early school closure. Please note that we send students home as you directed on the blue emergency transportation form you filled out in the beginning of the year. We do not have the ability to call all families and ask how students will get home in the event of an early closure, or to receive a high call volume for last-minute changes. In order to get students home safely and quickly, we rely on advance planning and the information from the emergency transportation form. If you didn't fill out a blue emergency transportation form at the beginning of the year, or need to make a change to your form, please contact the office as soon as possible.

PBIS with Mrs. Reed

For the month of January, we are practicing Happy Habit 3 - Put First Things First. Put First Things First means to decide what is most important and to take care of that first. Thinking about what needs to be done tomorrow or by the end of the week can be overwhelming, especially for children. Learning to think of which things are the most important and taking care of them first allows children (and adults) to be less stressed.

If your child uses a planner at school, then he or she has a great organizational tool to Put First Things First in writing. By writing down his or her responsibilities and planning ahead, last-minute trips to the store, missed events, or missed homework are avoided. If your child does not use a planner, having a weekly log would also be helpful. This could simply be a piece of paper that is used each week. Modeling this behavior is one of the best ways to teach children.

One activity you might try with your child is to create a list of things your child needs to accomplish throughout the week. With your child, rank the tasks in importance. Then rewrite the list in order of importance. You can also use a calendar or a planner to schedule time so that the important things are done first.
