Important Traffic Update!

Big picture

Traffic Pattern Changes

The Town of Mount Pleasant is beginning drainage work in the area on Monday, January 10, 2022. This includes flagging operations, road closures and a detour. The detour will keep traffic off of Center street from Edwards to Royall. This work will necessitate some important changes to our traffic pattern. Please read the details carefully:

  • The town will be tearing up sidewalks and student traffic will be affected!
  • This detour applies to all traffic including walkers and bike riders. Please plan another route to and from school with your child.
  • We are asking all car traffic to use Simmons street to enter the car line.
  • It is extremely important that we avoid parking along Simmons Street. This area is going to be very busy with all of our traffic being routed this way.
  • We ask that all traffic enter Simmons street at McCants. This will keep things flowing.

We know that it maybe easier for some to enter Simmons using other streets, but we ask/beg everyone to use the traffic pattern described above. We will have students walking and biking this route as well. For every child's safety we need your help. We need to work together to keep traffic flowing and students safe throughout this process.

Park & Ride Changes

The drainage project in the area will require some changes for park and ride as well. Due to some near misses in the Park and Ride area the Town of Mount Pleasant will be working on some changes that will affect this area as well.

  • The Town will be putting up an an 8 foot fence along the back of Pirate's Cove blocking off the path to the school. The are asking walkers and bikers in that area to exit the front of the neighborhood and walk/ride to school on the left side of the road in the grass (do not cross Center Street).
  • They will also be adding a gate along the parking areas to eliminate the "golf cart" parking that has sprung up close to the construction entrance.
  • The town is asking that ALL VEHICLES to park in spots along ballfields 1 and 2 and use the short diagonal sidewalk to get to the park and ride area.

A final word from your Principal:

I do not have any information on how long this change will be in place, but this is an ongoing project that could take weeks. Please be patient with each other and those that will be helping with this change. We are all on the same team.

I understand that change is hard. I also know that no one intentionally endangers the life of children when they are whipping into the parking lot on 2 wheels or swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid the extra 3 - 5 minute wait. We need everyone to follow the routes. It takes a village - literally and figuratively- to keep each other safe.

It is going to be especially important that children who walk/bike to school have a safe route while this change is happening. Since the sidewalks will be torn up students will be crossing Center Street at Simmons and walking in the grass until they get to the sidewalk.
