Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
We want to take a moment to acknowledge some hard-working folks who don't always get the spotlight at SCS. Our food service team has been a model of collaboration, resilience, and efficiency this year. Did you know that we serve more meals than any other school in the district? In September, we averaged 400 lunch meals served each day, which represents 57% of our student population. The most popular day was one of our Thursday pizza offerings, when 502 students got school lunch. Additionally, we are averaging 213 breakfasts served each day, representing 30% of our students.
School meals are free to all students again this year. Throughout the pandemic, the State of Vermont only required us to report the total number of each type of meal served. This year, we have to report which students are getting each type of meal, which has forced the food service team to revise their systems. By using laminated cards stored on holders in the hallway, they have been able to speed up the process to make sure every student has enough time to eat. We're incredibly grateful to our entire food service team for their dedication and endless good cheer!
We're also excited to welcome the PTO's Food Smart committee back to the cafeteria. As in past years, Food Smart will be working with classes throughout the building to prepare and serve a healthy, delicious meal. We're kicking things off next month with Stone Soup and hope to be able to offer additional tastes throughout the year. Given the manual labor and cooking implements involved, Food Smart is always looking for volunteers. Please check the link in the banner further down this newsletter to sign up for PTO updates if you're not getting them already. You can also connect with Food Smart through the link above or by reaching out to SCSfoodsmart@gmail.com.
Finally, we want to thank Liz Carney and the PTO at large for organizing the annual Dynamic Dates fundraiser. We've begun to notify student winners by delivering personalized invitations throughout the day. It has been so much fun to see students and staff members start connecting in creative ways! Keep an eye on the Shelburne News and our @SCSLearns Twitter account for some coverage of this fantastic tradition. The reporter who is working on the story is also interested in speaking with any students or families who would be willing to share their experience with Dynamic Dates...if that sounds like you, please reach out to Brett or Alison.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Take care,
Alison, Brett, & Emily
