Classroom Happenings

I miss your kids! It has been a wonderful Winter Break, but I am so excited to start the spring semester with your fifth graders tomorrow. Our last week of school in December was an eventful one. We completed our family Christmas presents, finished reading The City of Ember, finished our math unit on polygons/angles, and learned how to draw from one and two point perspective with a guest art teacher, Nadya Klingel. The last day of the semester we had our holiday party and fifth grade movie night. It was a fun and eventful week!

What's Next?

This week we will be starting fresh with new units all around. In reading we will be starting to read Wonder by: R.J. Palacio. This book covers the topics of bullying, friendship, betrayal, and overcoming challenges. As we read Wonder this quarter students will be meeting regularly to have literature circle discussions. In math we will begin our unit on fractions! Students will be adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions. We will start out our persuasive writing unit by writing an essay about which we enjoyed more: The City of Ember book or movie. Finally, in social studies we will be comparing the original 13 colonies and creating group billboards to encourage others to "move to our colony".

Geography Bee

The West Homer Geography Bee will take place this Friday, January 11th at 9:30 a.m. Families are encouraged to attend!

Performance Series Assessment

All fifth and sevenths grade students in the KPBSD will be taking an online test through EdPerfromance, a computer based assessment. These tests give us a general understanding of where kids are at in reading, writing and math. We will take the math portion of the test this Wednesday, the writing portion of the test on Thursday, and the reading portion next week.
