Hammerschmidt's Happenings
March 23rd- 27th
Dear WHS Staff,
I want to share an excerpt from one parent email. It certainly gave me some things to think about, and I hope it does for you as well. Here it is:
I really appreciate everything you and your staff are doing to help the children and the parents get thru this together. The e-mails and the information that you send out have been very helpful to especially the parents. I'm sure all parents are trying to communicate to the children what's going on with school. When I was putting XXXXXXX to bed last night he expressed sadness that he couldn't go back to school sooner. This got me thinking about the entire E-Learning process and how we can improve it. Obviously, a lot of the responsibility to teach our children has been the role of parents and even more so now. But I believe that our children look at you and the teachers as there educational LEADERS. Especially more than ever I think the kids need a strong leader to follow and look up too. I know that we have this at WHS but I think we need to figure out how we get you and other teachers back in front of them.
I know that your day's are probably extremely busy right now but I believe that a short quick video which was directed to the children could be very beneficial for the kids as well as the parents. I believe that they want to see and hear from there educational leaders. And a strong message about community, hard work, patience, love, etc.... would go a long way to helping them get through this.
We feel blessed to be apart of the Lombard and WHS community and are here to help anyway we can.
While this is one family's perspective, it reminded me what our kids needs from each of us. In the coming days I will be considering how I can best be visible and present in the lives of our kids while we are away from Hammerschmidt. I invite you to join me.

WHS OSOB Student & Family Website
You will notice in the parent letter linked on the website that parents were invited to read this book at a schedule of their choosing. While this was scheduled to be rolled out right after Spring Break, we felt that families might enjoy this book while they are home together now.

Special Promotion for WHS Staff Members- From Tolkin Family
This is Mimi Tolkin, parents of Alice, Ginger, Maria, and Helen. Our girls run the spectrum of schools here in Lombard - from 2nd grade through middle school and into Glenbard East.
Some of you may know that my husband Matt and I own a small catering business here in town. We specialize in school and corporate meals as well as meal home delivery. Most of our staff is either a parent of D44 kids, has kids at East - or are alum. As you can imagine, like everyone, we are trying to make sense of the ways in which the world as we knew it has turned on its head in the past week.
In response, we have greatly expanded our meal home delivery service to accommodate the so many who are working from home and isolating to flatten the curve. All our meals are made to order ready to heat and enjoy. We can deliver several days in advance and offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, and kids meals. We also deliver to homebound elderly. We use our own drivers and we don't go into homes - just porch drop. Meal delivery is what we've always done and is our specialty, so we're ready for this.
As a way of thanking all of the teachers and staff who are working so hard to make sure our kids, and every student, has some sense of normalcy and routine we want to offer a 15% discount on every order placed by a teacher or staff member in District 44 or from Glenbard East between now and the end of April. It's an unlimited discounted that can be used as much as anyone wants and is just a small token of our deep gratitude.
Please pass the message on to district and school personnel that you think would want it.
To order, please find us at www.righteouskitch.com or on Facebook. USE CODE: THANKYOU (all one word) to receive discount.
Thank you for all you're doing for our kids and hang in there...
Sincerely,
Mimi Tolkin
