Waitlisted or Deferred? What Does It Really Mean?
In the counseling office we enjoy when students visit us and bring their college acceptance letters. Some of our students have already been accepted and now are eagerly awaiting their freshmen year of college. However, there are times when a student may receive a letter stating that they are on the waitlist or deferred. This can be confusing, and you may find yourself wondering what this really means. The first thing to be aware of is the fact that being on a waitlist is not the same thing as being deferred. If your application is deferred, it means that you have not been accepted or denied yet. The college is interested enough in you, but they have not made a decision. If you are on a waitlist, it means that the admission staff has reviewed your application, but you will have to wait and see if they have space for you. If you are waitlisted or deferred, please see your school counselor. We can explain the process in more detail and help you to make some good decisions.
