A Growing Math Brain
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
In the previous math segments I have shared games that can be played at home and on-the-go to help develop our children’s flexibility with numbers. There are many children that love to play games with numbers and are still excited about math. Yet for many other children it has become a source of stress. Numbers have become confusing and scary, and children have become comfortable saying “I’m not a math person”.
Jo Boaler, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, reminds us in her article “Advice for Parents” that before starting school young children talk about math with curiosity and wonder, (which can be found on her website youcubed.org). So the question is, how do we preserve that sense of curiosity and wonder when math becomes harder?
A growth mindset is critical in our students. Just like reading, soccer, or piano, math is something that takes practice. Practice makes better. Our children have unlimited potential. If we continue to foster a growth mindset in our children they will do well with challenges and do better in school overall.
This week’s tip comes from Jo Boaler:
One way in which parents encourage a fixed mindset is by telling their children they are “smart” when they do something well. That seems like a nice thing to do, but it sets children up for difficulties later, as when kids fail at something they will inevitably conclude that they aren’t smart after all. Instead use growth praise such as “it is great that you have learned that”, “I really like your thinking about that”. When they tell you something is hard for them, or they have made a mistake, tell them: “That’s wonderful, your brain is growing!”
Bullying & Cyberbullying Basics assembly
Next week, the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University will be doing two assemblies at Dunning
- Grades 2 & 3: Wednesday, April 3rd
- Grades 4 & 5: Tuesday, April 2nd
Bullying & Cyberbullying Basics - Grades 2 & 3
During this interactive group assembly, students are introduced to key concepts and terms used in discussing bullying. There is a discussion about the difference between conflict and bullying and students are presented with different scenarios to help them identify whether those scenarios depict conflict or bullying. Basic information about cyberbullying is presented, such as the concept that using disrespectful language toward others online can be very damaging and hurtful. We talk about how to cope with different types of bullies and cyberbullies, and how to be a good friend and classmate. The importance of talking to adults about bullying and cyberbullying is emphasized. The presentation also encourages students to support their peers and introduces different ways for them to provide that support. Students are encouraged, throughout the presentation, to talk about bullying with others and not to keep it a secret.
Bullying and Cyberbullying Basics - Grades 4 & 5
This assembly is designed to help students define and understand bullying, cyberbullying, and relational aggression. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the difference between conflict, drama, and bullying. Online safety is discussed and students are educated about the dangers of disclosing too much online, such as sending or posting inappropriate photos. Students will gain awareness about how serious and hurtful words and actions online can be. The presentation also offers students practical advice for avoiding problems online. Concrete tools and tips for dealing with bullies in school and online are presented. Advice for bystanders is also provided.

CARE & SHARE
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
