#TheRidge News
1/15/2021
Dear Catawba Ridge Families,
It's been a busy 1st full week back at CRHS. We completed a week of EOC testing today. Next Friday will mark the end our 1st semester. First semester exams will be conducted next week. Please encourage students to prepare and do their best. The district has announced that we remain an A/B schedule as we begin second semester. The district will continue to monitor numbers every two weeks to determine if/when we will return to full face to face learning.
Second semester schedules can be accessed in PowerSchool TODAY, January 15, @4:00pm. In November and December, Administration had to completely rearrange the second semester master schedule due to enrollment changes for “in person” and “virtual” students. Once the master schedule was adjusted, Guidance Counselors re-scheduled every student by hand. Some classes that students originally requested are no longer offered either “in person” or “virtually”; therefore, students may have been scheduled in their alternate electives.
Schedule changes will ONLY be made for the following reasons:
- Senior who failed a course needed for graduation.
- There is a hole in the schedule, meaning only 3 classes.
- Student did not request the course as chosen elective or alternate elective.
- Senior is requesting to drop a course they no longer need for graduation or college admission and is seeking to replace it with a Free Block (1st or 4th).
We are very limited in any movement this year within our schedule. Please email your school Guidance Counselor ONLY if you meet one of the criteria above. Email addresses for Guidance Counselors can be found on our website under "Guidance". Any request that does not meet the criteria above will not be changed, per Administration. Guidance Counselors will respond to any emails in the order they are received beginning on Tuesday.

Extra Help Before School: Students may come in early for extra help on their scheduled days with teacher permission and a pass from their teacher. This needs to be at the request of the teacher. Students can enter through the front door of the building at the main office starting at 7:45 AM. Students will need to submit a pass in the main office before proceeding to their class.

Virtual Apprenticeship Opportunity Open House 1/16/2021
Attention, parents of Juniors and Seniors! Did your child grow up taking things apart to see how they worked and/or building with Legos or other tools/methods? Do they learn best by doing? They might want to consider an apprenticeship in manufacturing that involves mechanical, electrical, electronics and machining challenges. These are sophisticated career paths and competitive opportunities only offered by a few companies, which typically have headquarters in Europe where up to 60% of their workforce starts as apprentices.
If this sounds appropriate for your student, please consider participating in a Virtual Apprenticeship Opportunity Open House this Saturday 1/16/21. There will be four companies highlighted: Groninger, Siemens, Chiron and Pfaff Mold. See the details in the invitation/flyer.
REQUIREMENTS:
Unweighted GPA: 2.5-2.8 is the minimum but this is a competitive program and does not guarantee admission to the program
Behavior and Attendance: no serious behavior issues and fewer than five absences per year
Age requirement: Each company may have unique age requirements.
Employment Status: Siemens hires the apprentices as contract employees. After two years they become full-time Siemens employees with benefits. All the other companies hire with full-time status and benefits from the first day.
Salary/bonuses: All registered apprentices have a progressive wage scale, whereby at the end of the apprenticeship, DOL mandates that apprentices make 85% of the entry level equivalent. However, each company develops their own progressive wage scale and incentive pay.
