Modified Operations and Heightened Protection Protocol
Hello Crawford families,
This has been a wild week with students and staff absent and many families reporting positive COVID test results to the school. The district is committed to keeping school open and to keeping students and staff safe, so we moved into Modified Operations on Friday, with two classes moving to Heightened Protection Protocol. If your child is in one of those two classes you received an email with instructions for Monday, January 24 through Monday, January 31.
Modified Operations are in effect schoolwide and will be as listed below. All visitors are be expected to adhere to the school's protocols.
- Regular surveillance testing of identified students and staff (two classes have been identified for Heightened Protection Protocol and parents notified)
- Masking through January 31 for the two classrooms identified
- Building access during the school day will be limited to the office
- Large group gatherings will be limited
- Increased high touch surface cleaning
- Sharing of classroom supplies will be limited
As of Friday, January 21, two classes have been placed in Heightened Protection Protocol.
Heightened Protection Protocol -When there is a known transmission identified within a class, heightened protection protocols that include surveillance testing (testing of non-symptomatic people) provide an opportunity for individuals to continue with in-person school instead of closing an entire classroom. Parents will be notified prior to any surveillance testing. The parent permission form was included in the letter of January 21 or you may update your preferences in PowerSchool.
Students may continue to attend school, as long as they:
- Wear a well-fitted mask for the duration of the heightened protection protocol (Through January 31)
- Participate in a surveillance screening at school every few days for approximately ten days, and receive negative test results. (See the schedule in the letter of January 21)
- Stay home at the first sign of any symptoms, and follow the Wellness Check for Students & Staff
- Consider COVID testing if symptoms appear
Staff and students who choose not to participate in surveillance screening as outlined in the heightened protection protocol shall follow the close contact quarantine requirements instead. They may return to school after 10 days, without the expectation for testing. The mask requirement stays in place until January 31. Students who choose to stay home will access their classwork through the google classroom
This is a difficult time and we are working hard to keep school open and available for all of our students. Please understand that the protocols represent our best efforts at keeping everyone safe and mitigating COVID transmission. If you have questions or concerns please send me an email at teresa.lesage@k12northstar.org or call me at 907-372-3306.

School Efficiency Task Force Information
Communication was recently sent out by the school district regarding the potential closing of Anderson Elementary, the shifting of Anderson students/staff to the Crawford building (K-5), and the 6th grade students shifting to BEJH/BEHS. The Administrative Memo in the School Board Agenda puts this plan forward as the preferred course of action.
Any public comments can be made to schoolboard@k12northstar.org. The task force recommendations are linked here. On February 1, 2022 - The Board will vote on the final recommendation
If you haven't yet read the survey results shared, please check the results, as published in the agenda linked above, for insight as to the community feedback on the School Efficiency Report.
