SecondStep Advisory Curriculum
We want your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.
This week, we'll begin the Second Step Middle School Program, which focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include:
Mindsets and Goals: Students learn about ways to grow their brains and get smarter, along with research-based strategies for achieving goals and handling difficult situations.
Values and Friendships: Students learn to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn the positive role emotions play in their lives, how to handle unhelpful thoughts and strong emotions, and specific strategies for calming down.
Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills and concepts that lead to success in school and in life.
Lesson Summary by Grade Level for this upcoming week:
Sixth Graders in this week’s lesson will learn how their brains are changing and how the Second Step Program can help them grow their brains and learn to be successful.
For Seventh Graders in this week's lesson, it will help your child understand some of the changes that happen during adolescence, and how the Second Step Program can help your child succeed and do well, both as a student and as a friend.
For Eighth Graders in this week's lesson, it will help your child understand some of the changes that happen during adolescence and how the social-emotional skills taught in the Second Step Program can help your child be successful and get along with others, in middle school and beyond.

The Great Apple Crunch
The Great Apple Crunch, taking place throughout Illinois on Thursday, October 11, encourages healthy eating and supports farm to school and other local food purchasing initiatives
throughout the region. Brooks is celebrating the Great Apple Crunch! All hot lunch orders will include a local apple on October 11 and all other students will get to sample local apples in the cafeteria that day, too.
Did you know?
- Conventional apples travel over 2,000 miles on average to Illinois. Local apples come from within 250 miles--saving the environment in CO2 emissions and gas.
- For every dollar spent on local, 3X more money recirculates locally.
- 6 in 10 children in the US do NOT eat their daily serving of fruit, according to the CDC.
Special thanks to the Brooks Green Team and the Eco Eagles for supporting this event!
