Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
All students will demonstrate growth in their social-emotional learning.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Dear Winfield Friends and Family,
The start of a new year is a great time to review our safety procedures. Please take a look at Winfield's Top Ten list for arriving and exiting school safely. All are very important!
- Students ENTER the building through the CAR RIDER LINE. If you pull up after 9:05, you will need to park and walk your child in. Children must be in their classroom ready to go at 9:05 am. If they are pulling up to the building at 9:02 am, there is little chance they will make it to their classroom on time. Please get here early! Students are marked tardy at 9:05.
- Students EXIT the building through the CAR RIDER LINE. Parents do not come into the office to pick children up unless there is a scheduled appointment.
- The CAR RIDER LINE is a DOUBLE LINE. Cars do not merge until the very end.
- Cars ENTER THE LOT from the NORTH entrance during arrival/dismissal time.
- All cars have NAMES DISPLAYED IN FRONT WINDOWS.
- Baby it's cold outside! Make sure your student has a HAT, GLOVES, and COAT each day. It's cold entering and exiting the building. Boots (and shoes to change into) are great as well! Children must have SNOW boots and pants to play in the snow at recess.
- Practice PATIENCE in the line. Be courteous to others when merging. We move as quickly as we can while promoting safety for all.
- Please refrain from using CELL PHONES while the line is in motion. When all drivers are alert and focused, we can move through arrival/dismissal quickly and safely.
- CAR RIDER CHANGES are called into the office by 3pm. Don't assume that an email or DOJO message to a teacher during the day will make it's way to the office. The best way to ensure your child's name is televised at the end of the day is to call the office!
- KEEP OUR AIR SAFE FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF! Idling cars (even in this COLD weather!) are prohibited near school buildings. If your car is not in motion, it must remain turned off. Smoking is also prohibited on school property. This includes inside of vehicles on our premises. If someone other than you picks your child up, please pass along these safety points and procedures.
Thank you for making our second half of our school year safe for our school!

Happy New Year to all our Winfield families!! I am excited to welcome students back into the building this week.
Let’s talk behaviors! As a parent, anytime our child displays behaviors we are quickly put into a position to address and react to it. Perspective is everything when it comes to children and their behaviors. One thing that we do know is all behavior is a form of communication. Children do not misbehave to give adults a hard time, they misbehave because THEY are having a hard time. When we see changes in our child’s behavior that is consistent, there’s no doubt it becomes a concern for parents. That’s when we need to take a closer look at what might be triggering the change. The graphic I am sharing is a great visual of depicting considerations to make. We need to look below the surface, beyond the behaviors we see on the surface.
We must remember, children need to learn effective means to get their needs met, because they simply have not undergone the development, nor had the life experiences necessary to do so. We can help facilitate these skills by: having conversations with children about emotions, identifying appropriate ways to cope, and modeling these skills ourselves. In doing so, we open up the possibility to support our child’s emotional well-being, and effectively help them through those challenging behaviors.

Reading Connection
From the School Nurse, Mrs. Taylor
We are so happy to have our students back at school! I have missed seeing their smiling faces! Beginning next week all 1st grade students will have vision screening completed. This is a state mandated screening that involves checking each 1st graders for visual acuity. Screening takes only a few minutes and is done by one of our CPCSC school nurses here at school during the school day. Any students having visual difficulty during the screening will be sent home with a request to see an eye doctor for further evaluation. If your 1st grade student wears glasses please be sure they have their glasses with them at school next week.
If your child is not feeling well please do not send them to school. If you are unsure if it is safe to send your child to school please call me for guidance. Also if your family has been exposed to COVID please call for guidance on quarantine requirements.

As a school we believe it is important to recognize students on their birthdays. To protect instructional time in the classroom and manage student health needs, we do not allow edible birthday treats in the classroom (this includes CANDY in treat bags). Your child is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
OPTIONAL: Families wishing to celebrate their child's birthdays at lunch may purchase Ice Cream Tickets for each child in the class. Tickets are $0.75 each. Please complete an order form in the office 1 week prior to birthday.
