The Goshen Gazette
September 2020
From the Principal - Mr. Graves
Greetings Goshen Lane Families,
Congratulations, and thank you, for helping us get off to a very good school year. I think I am safe in saying that none of us wished for the school year to have to begin this way, however, since this is what we had to do, I believe collectively, as a school community, we came together and made the best out of the situation. There were certainly a few glitches and challenges to be worked through, and most likely will continue to be. I thank you for your cooperation, patience, and understanding as we worked to fix or correct various issues. Let's continue to work together and support each other throughout this time of Distance Learning as well as when we return to the school building.
Speaking of returning to the building. It sounds like we may be able to do that sooner than we were initially thinking. Last week Superintendent Steve Barrett sent you all a communication that included the following information.
Governor DeWine announced that Franklin County’s COVID alert level has improved from red to orange and that Franklin County Public Health also changed their recommendations and suggested schools consider moving forward with implementing a transition to a hybrid learning model. We are already making plans for our transition from distance learning to the hybrid model; however there are several things that need to happen before we can make that shift. It is our plan to enroll all GJPS students in the hybrid model and then allow interested families to opt out of the hybrid model for the distance learning model. It is important that we allow families another chance to choose a model best for them. The last time we asked what model was best for your family was in the first week of July, and we know some things may have changed for you since then. After receiving this data, we will then make staffing adjustments and communicate our transition plans.
You will soon receive the survey allowing you to indicate your preference. Please be sure to complete that survey so that we know how to place your student for the remainder of the school year. To read the complete letter from the superintendent click the following link.
The Role Parents Play in Online Learning
Recently I have been reading articles on the role parents play in distance learning. I know teachers, and many parents may be challenged to find that balance. Here are some of the writings I came across that you may find helpful.
- Students should see their parents as their greatest cheerleaders and coaches, knowing a coach won’t be misleading or overly positive, but constructive and goal-oriented. They need to reinforce the bigger picture and how the responsibilities of today point to the larger intention.
- A parent who is overly supportive can strip a student of their opportunity to learn and succeed on their own. Students can become reliant on their parent’s support and especially in online learning, where the instructor is a screen away, can a parent more easily disrupt the learning rhythm.
- Help students “own” their own learning. No one expects parents to be full-time teachers or to be educational and content matter experts. Provide support and encouragement, and expect your children to do their part. Struggling is allowed and encouraged! Don’t help too much. There are times when teachers need to be able to assess what the student knows and understands without the support of others. Becoming independent takes lots of practice.
- If your kid gets caught up saying negative things about themselves, encourage self-kindness by asking them what they would say to a friend in the same situation.
- The same goes for you: We often beat ourselves up as parents, but what would a good friend say to you? What would you say to your friend?
Success Tip
Hold a storytelling night. Each person can tell a family story, perhaps about a sibling’s first birthday party or the day you got your dog. Encourage everyone to include interesting details and build suspense to make the tales entertaining.
