This Week In Band (Nov 4-8, 2019)

We just received news that two of our students were selected to the National Band Association - Wisconsin Chapter All-State Junior Band. Congratulations to:

David Willey - 7th Tuba

Abby Lydon - 7th Flute

Both of these students will perform at the Finale Concert of the 36th Annual Convention of the NBA-WC. The concert will be held in the auditorium in the Arts and Communications Center on the UW-Oshkosh campus on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

The 2020 All-State Junior Band is comprised of students from across the state. Renee Rademaker, a well-known and highly respected music educator from Cumberland, Wisconsin, will conduct this year’s band.

Quarter 1 Feedback Coming This Week

6th and 7th Grade Band Families will soon receive an email with an attachment containing your child's recent self-assessment document for 1st quarter. The document will contain comments from Mrs. Haraldson, Mrs. Gary, Mrs. Rush and myself (or some combination).

Please review it with your child and let us know if you have any questions. Research has shown that students who practice self-reflection and self-analysis do better and accomplish more. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to practice self-reflection and self-analysis while receiving feedback from their teachers. This process will also provide you with a multifaceted report on student progress. These reports will be sent to you in the form of a PDF once per quarter and will give you more information than what you will see in their official grades.

With that said...we will still enter an "official grade" for both 6th and 7th graders. The grades are based on the following proficiency statements:

Band Proficiency Statements

  1. Individual skills - Demonstrates appropriate skills & techniques in lessons.

  2. Ensemble skills - Demonstrates appropriate skills & techniques in large group settings.

  3. Imagination, Creativity, Composition, Improvisation & Innovation

  4. Literacy - Read, Write, Listen, Speak and Think

  5. Analysis & Evaluation - Respond to music through analysis and evaluation

  6. Connections - Demonstrate connections between art, culture, history, community & self.

  7. Building Myelin - Demonstrate goal-oriented practice, practice strategies, and self-evaluations.
