Prestwick STEM Academy
Prestwick Profile - Community Vol. 8
We Want You Here!
September is Attendance Awareness Month and we know that when students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic success rates as well. Research has found that "students who arrived at school academically ready to learn— but then missed 10 percent of their kindergarten and first grade years—scored an average of 60 points below similar students with good attendance on third-grade reading tests." (Applied Survey Research, 2011) A student is considered chronically absent by missing only 2 days per month. Students who miss just 2 school days each month (18 days a year) are more likely to fall behind in reading, writing, and math, making them less likely to graduate. "Ensuring kids actually make it to school is a vital part of leveling the playing field. Just missing a couple of days of school a month can mean the difference between dropping out and graduating on time. Absences add up. That's why eliminating chronic absenteeism is a critical part of our work at the federal, state, and local level to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed." (John B King, former US Secretary of Education)
Parents have a critical role in making sure that children get to school regularly and on time. Here are a few considerations regarding your child’s school attendance:
Schedule doctor, dental, and other appointments after school or on school holidays, when possible.
Plan family vacations for scheduled school holidays.
Have a plan for your child to get to school if their normal method doesn’t work out. For instance, if they miss the school bus or your car doesn’t start, seek out other options. For the month of August our ADA (average daily attendance) was 98.68%. Our goal at Prestwick this year is to keep our ADA above 98% each month. Please help us reach this goal by making sure your student is at school on time and ready to learn. Thank you so much for all of your support!!

Many of my best memories were shared with my grandparents are similar to this quote. They were a lifelines to my history and filled our time with the best stories and hugs. Often my family joined one another at meal time and we spent hours playing games. I am most thankful to my each of my grandparents who showered me with love and understood just what I needed.
Thank you to our Prestwick beloved Grandparents who came out in abundance this past Friday. It was wonderful to witness the joy of each and every learner as they drew pictures, worked in math stations, built cup towers, played bingo, etc. They also were able to visit lunch times.
We hope this fond memory will be shared with one another for years to come. Many thanks to our Prestwick Parent Teacher Association (PTA) who provided cookie treats and water for our grandparents visiting. We look forward to next years celebration!!
