***This is the last weekly of 21-22***

Week of 5/23/2022

Dear CST Family,

This is it! The final week of the 21-22 school year is upon us. As we have promoted the engagement driven #CSTFinishLine hashtag the final two weeks of school, those weeks have certainly felt like a race! There were 5 separate music concerts, an 8th grade activity night, a spirit week, along with all the #CSTFinishLine activities being done in classrooms. The week ahead is short with a final dismissal at 11:15am on Wednesday, but not without some important and fun events. Tuesday evening is our 8th grade night of recognition. All 8th graders are invited to attend with their families to receive a promotional certificate along with various content-specific awards. On the last half day of school, all grade levels have end of year activities planned for their students. We indeed plan to sprint through the #CSTFinishLine this final week. Search the hashtag on Twitter to follow along!

Before I close the final weekly, I want to thank you, our parents, for your role in the successful school year. Your commitment to your child enhances what we are able to do here. I hope your involvement has always felt welcomed and your questions addressed from us here at CST because I viewed the home-school relationship as critical to the success of our children. The year is never without challenges and certainly none like the challenges the past few years, but I truly view this year as a success for our students and I’m hopeful one that created many lasting positive memories for your child.

The halls will go quiet in just a few days, but preparation is already underway for the 22-23 school year. To our 8th grade and/or non-returning families, I wish you all the best and hope to hear about your child’s progress along the way. To our 6th and 7th grade returning families, I look forward to your return and to all the opportunities ahead for your child. More good days are ahead and our aim will be to make future years even better than the ones before.

I hope this time away brings some joy, relaxing, and rejuvenation for all. Have a wonderful summer and we’ll see you in the fall!

Message to 5th Grade Families...

...WELCOME to the CST Family! This is the Weekly Wildcat newsletter that is emailed weekly to CST families. Below is a brief outline of what to expect out of this weekly communication...

  • This newsletter is updated weekly (except during the summer) and sent out each weekend
  • You will receive an email and text letting you know the WW was updated along with a list of new topics
  • The newsletter is divided into two parts: new info and "repeated but still relevant"
  • This is a great way to stay in the "know" on what is occurring at CST
  • In addition, you can also always check out our website (https://www.olatheschools.org/chisholmtrail/) where there is a link to the Weekly Wildcat on the CST home page
  • Also, follow us on Twitter @CSTWildcatsMS to follow some of the fun and student engagement at CST
  • If at any time you feel like you may not be receiving information from the school please contact us at 913-780-7240. Data Operator, Melynda Marquardt (mrmarquardt@olatheschools.org), will be able to verify and/or correct the contact info on file.

A few weeks ago we hosted 5th graders at CST. Students were given a tour, ate some lunch, and heard from many of their future teachers. The most energized part of the day was our pep assembly where the CST jazz band played, cheer and dance performed, and students learned the CST fight song and cheer—“CST Rocks!” We cheered for each of our respective elementary schools, but cheered as one single group for CST! I reminded our students that while we’re all coming from different schools, we are joining together as wildcats next year for what I expect to be an amazing year at Chisholm Trail.

You may have heard about a visit from me and our mascot, Wally, to your child’s elementary school. Our goal was to deliver t-shirts…which was accomplished…but not without a few stops. Feel free to check out what your child saw prior to our visit…if you watch through the end you may even spot your own child meeting Wally for the first time!

Mr. Sola and Wally the Wildcat visit 5th Graders!

Applications for Olathe Teen Council 2022-2023 (8th graders)

We’re excited to announce that applications are open for the 2022-2023 Olathe Teen Council!

Teens will be able to meet with the City Council, learn how their local government works, how to be involved and how to amplify their voice. They’ll also be able to identify specific issues they are interested in learning more about and find a way to have an impact. We have multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the year. We also hope to take some teens to the National League of Cities conferences in Kansas City in 2022 and Washington DC in 2023.

This opportunity is open to any student who will be a high schooler in 2022-2023 and lives in Olathe. We generally accept between 10 and 20 members.

Students are encouraged to apply! The application is available at OlatheKS.org/TeenCouncil. It does require a short essay as well as two letters of recommendation. Applications are due July 1.

Congrats, Ms. Detrick and Ms. Stumbo, on your retirement...you will be missed!

A Message from Mrs. Rodden

Greetings Wildcat Families,

As I have worked with students Chisholm Trial over the last five years, I have always told student that I would ask them to do hard things, but I always reassure them they would never be alone. If I were not to challenge myself to do the same, I would feel like a liar.

It is time for me to tackle another challenge in life and grow as a person and a counselor. I shared with your students this Thursday I will not be returning to Chisholm next year; I have accepted a counseling position at Oregon Trail Middle School. It is with a gigantic range of emotions I am sharing this with you because I have been so honored that you have trusted me with being a part of your student’s middle school journey, they have blessed me in so many ways. Although I am not their “counselor” next year, I will still consider them my kids and they will always be.

You are in the hands of some of the most amazing people I know, teachers, Mrs. Iuli, Mr. Sola, Mrs. Richerson, and Mrs. Dueringer have your student’s interest at the core of their hearts!!

My email will stay the same, never hesitate to reach out. amrodden@olatheschools.org

Again, thank you for allowing me to be a piece of your journey!

Ashley

Go Guardian Features for Parents!

What is Go Guardian? (device monitoring software)

Go Guardian Parent was created to help provide additional educational support to administrators and teachers by allowing parents to see what sites and documents their children are browsing and providing parents with additional internet controls at home. The app gives parents and guardians a bird’s eye view of the apps and websites that their kids are on most often and control over school-issued devices during out-of-school hours. With this perspective, parents can be made aware of what types of browsing behavior schools are seeing from students so they can all work together to encourage more effective internet browsing habits at home and at school.

See the attached PDF for more information and directions on how to download the app.

Counseling Corner

The Counseling Department would like to take a moment to share a resource from Children’s Mercy Hospital with you. Please use this link https://www.childrensmercy.org/departments-and-clinics/developmental-and-behavioral-health/prepped-and-ready/ to access information about Prepped and Ready: Parenting into the Teen Years. This is set up as a short video series that you can watch as your schedule permits. There is no cost, and if you complete a short survey at the end, Children’s Mercy will send you a great safety kit.

Topics include eating disorder prevention, home safety (including storage of firearms, medications, etc.), screen time, self-care, substance use (including vaping), and suicide prevention.

This resource will only be available for a short time, so please don’t wait!

Contact your child's counselor with questions.

CST Student Handbook

Two topics often asked about are cell phones and attire. The screenshots below are from the student handbook found on our website. We aim to promote a distraction-free learning environment as much as possible and we remind students that "Chisholm Trail is a school, not the pool". We want to promote a positive academic learning environment in the way we dress, speak, and behave. Teachers and admin will review a variety of topics with students as part of our beginning of year talks.
