Brookdale In-Person Learning
Transition to Five Days 4/13
LUNCH
- What will lunch look like at Brookdale?
In the tent, students will receive the "Brookdale Picnic Experience", which includes our students sitting on a home provided towel at a number assigned to each student. The student's towel should be labeled with his/her name on it and will remain in your child's back pack to come back and forth to school. If you do not send a towel in with your student, your student will not have a towel to sit on. Not having furniture in the tent allows for us to accommodate more students in the alternate space, keep students in a designated safe eating area, and quickly be able to pivot to a "Plan B" eating location (gym and MPR) if weather requires us to evacuate the tent. We want to keep using these tents for the remainder of the school year and could really use your help. We know it will be appealing for people after hours and on weekends. Please talk to your children that the tent is only to be used during school hours. If they see people in the tent after hours, to please tell you. If you would be so kind as to call 911, we would greatly appreciate it. We want to ensure the tents are not vandalized in any way, and the support of our students and families will make a difference.
Students will participate in recess, but the playground access will be prohibited. Students will have zones to play within with their class cohort. Different activities will rotate through the zones each day. We are appreciative of our P.E. Teacher, Mr. Tabisz, who is collaborating with administration in planning fun zones for students to participate in safely.
- How will hand hygiene be handled?
Students will be washing their hands before lunch, sanitizing on their way to recess, and washing after recess. We have had to work through the logistics of making this work at all of our grade levels. We are incredibly grateful to our PTA who have purchased four hand washing stations to accommodate this.
- Can students go home for lunch?
Parents are allowed to take their children home for lunch. They would need to sign them out and back in when returning in the main office.
PLAYGROUNDS
• Will playgrounds still be open during recess?
Playground access will be prohibited.
CLASSROOMS
- Will students be provided time for a snack during the day?
To ensure we limit the time students have masks off, the district has implemented a protocol of 3.5 hours from the time a student would last eat whether snack time is needed. As a result, snack time will only be implemented in three of our six grade levels whose lunches are early or later in the day.
- When will I know my child's schedule?
Your child will be learning from 9:00-3:00 daily, whether in-person or on Zoom. We will have our "Roomers" and our "Zoomers". Teachers have been busy preparing their individual schedules off of our building master schedule. They will share them with you by 4/9.
- If my child is sick, will he/she be able to join remotely?
During our hybrid instruction, we have been able to be flexible regarding in-person learning absences. As we transition into five full days a week, unless it is due to an extended COVID quarantine, we will not be able to accommodate students jumping back and forth between learning platforms. There is a great deal of instructional preparation and materials that will go into zooming students into the classroom. If your child is sick, we want them to step away from the screen, rest, get better, and come back to us soon!
- Are outdoor classrooms being considered?
There is an outdoor classroom at Brookdale. Our outdoor learning space along with our tent space, when not being utilized for lunch, has a sign-up for teachers to utilize. Knowing our teachers, they will come up with all sorts of creative ideas!
- How are you handling students in smaller spaces such as the PA room?
Any space that cannot accommodate students 3 feet apart will be moved to an alternate learning location.

Self-Certification
Brookdale's Self-Certification Process:
*Please self-certify by 8:30am!
1. Any students who are not self-certified by 8:50am will receive a call from Brookdale for a final reminder to self-certify.
2. At 9:00am, students are sent to the nurse's office for self-certification to take place.
Interested in a daily morning text Remind(er) to Self-Certify your student(s) who will be attending in-person? If so, sign up for a reminder text! Text @bkdlsc to the number 81010. You will receive a welcome text from Remind and a reminder each morning from Brookdale!
Details regarding Self-Certification Required Before Coming to School:
Parents need to use ParentVUE to self-certify that students coming on campus are free of COVID-like symptoms before students arrive at school each day. When you login to ParentVUE, you will see a screen asking you to self-certify that your child is symptom free. This video explains the simple process of how to complete this step. If this step is not completed and your child is at school, a health services staff member will call you to discuss your child's health status.
Please note, if you are using the ParentVUE app to self-certify, you need to make sure you are using the most updated version and are logged in. If you have any difficulties with the app, please use the desktop version to complete self-certification.
The self-certification prompt will appear each day you login to ParentVUE, regardless of your child’s schedule for in-person learning. You only need to complete this step on the days your child will be at school.
We ask that you please monitor your child's health closely and keep them home if they aren't feeling well. You can report your child's absence using ParentVUE after completing the self-certification process.
School Day Begins at 9:00am

Classroom Structure
Arrival/Dismissal
Please maintain district safety protocols when on district property: 6 foot distancing and a face covering is required.
For dismissal, students who are bus riders will be dismissed from the classroom at 11:25am. Following, classrooms will follow a staggered dismissal system.
All students will enter and exit through the same door (see link to see grade level door assignments on our map). *Kindergarten Parents: Please pay special attention to the kindergarten arrival/dismissal door on the map (front of school). Parents should come to door 11 if picking up the kindergartner as a walker. All remaining kindergarten students will be escorated and supervised at the car line.
Students arrive and dismiss from school one of three ways:
1. Bus
2. Car
3. Walk
Bus
Car
Students that arrive by car should follow the car rider visual map for lining up in the car line. The car line will not begin unloading until 8:50am.
Kindergarten students are welcome to use the car line this year. Extra supervision has been assigned to accommodate our littlest learners.
Please ensure you pull all the way up when instructed by staff. All cars will stop, students unload on the curb side, and the process continues.
Below is a video recorded, during a typical school year, to help provide a visual for the car line procedures.
Walker
If you are parking and walking to school using one of the side streets, please follow street signs and pay attention to curb markings.
There will be three crossing guards on duty:
1. Across from the school on Redfield at the crosswalk
2. At the intersection of Bainbridge and Redfield
3. At the path to the school on Bainbridge
Meal Pick-Up Time Change
Meal pick-up times are being adjusted to assist with traffic flow around the elementary schools as students return the week of January 18. Starting next week, families with children in elementary school are asked to pick-up meals between 10:45 AM and 11:15 AM. Families with students in middle and high school are asked to pick up meals from Noon until 1:30 PM.
If you would like your child to pick-up his/her meal, have them dismiss through door 2 to grab a meal on his/her way out. The student can grab two meals for the day he/she is not present.
