Principal's Message

I am looking forward to the start of the 2022-2023 school year! We are excited to see our students and families this week. This newsletter contains information on updated procedures, COVID-19 protocols, and beginning of school information.


PTA's Annual Ice Cream Social will be held on August 10th beginning at 4:30 pm. This will be an outdoor event. Class lists will be posted, COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests will be distributed and various informational tables will be available to visit. Some spirit wear will also be available for purchase. Please note that teachers will not be attending this event.


The first day of school for our students is Thursday, August 11, 2022. Please see the drop-off and pick-up procedures below. After you drop off your student(s), parents, especially new parents, are invited to our BooHoo WooHoo PTA coffee. Here, you will be able to meet other families, and PTA members will be present to answer any general questions.

Please note that Labor Day is a school holiday on September 5, 2022.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Faces at Webster

Webster happily welcomes:

Ms. Monge, our 5 hour Special Ed PreK teacher.

Mrs. Surnock, our Armenian World Language teacher working with TK-1st graders this year.

Ms. Delgado who will be a resident teacher working with Ms. Cooper Horn and Mrs. Mejia in our TK class daily.

Daily Start and Dismissal Times

Monday: 7:50 am to 12:35 pm

Tuesday-Friday: 7:50 am to 2:15 pm

Pick-up and Drop-off

Please prescreen at home for fever and other signs of COVID19 such as cough, runny nose or exposure to anyone who has tested positive for COVID19.


PreK, TK and Kinder student drop-off will be at the Pepper Drive Gate/Kindergarten Playground. PreK parents should look for specifics directly from the classroom teachers. TK and Kinder parents may walk students to the kindergarten playground. Just prior to the 7:50am bell, TK and Kinder students will line up by classes. The teachers will meet the classes on the playground and walk the students into their classrooms. Parents, please say your goodbyes on the playground and join us for our Boo Hoo Woo Hoo Coffee on the Kindergarten playground.

You may park in the St. James parking lot on Washington Blvd and take the short walk to our kindergarten playground.

Please DO NOT make any three point or U-turns on Pepper Drive. This is extremely dangerous and illegal.

Please do not block our neighbors' driveways.

TK and Kindergarten pick-up is at the drive-thru around the staff parking lot with our 1st-5th graders. Pre-K pick-up is the same as drop-off at the Pepper Drive gate.


Drop-off and pick-up for 1st-5th grade students will at the drive-thru around the staff parking lot. Please pull up as far as possible. At drop-off, students should have backpacks with them inside the car to be most time efficient. Make sure to not block the left lane. The left lane will be reserved for thru traffic. DO NOT park in the staff parking lot as we need the spaces for our staff. You may park in the St. James parking lot on Washington Blvd and take the short walk to our walking gate. Walkers and bikers may enter at the gate in between the staff parking lot and the auditorium.


1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students will line up on the upper playground. Teachers will meet the classes on the playground and walk the students to their classrooms. Parents, please say your goodbyes on the playground and join us for our Boo Hoo Woo Hoo Coffee on the Kindergarten playground.


4th and 5th grade students may line up outside the classrooms. Teachers will meet them at the door. Parents, please say your goodbyes on the field and join us for our Boo Hoo Woo Hoo Coffee on the Kindergarten playground.

Free Rapid Antigen Test Kits distributed during PTA Ice Cream Social

PUSD is providing Rapid Antigen Tests Kits to all our families and staff. These will be distributed at the Ice Cream Social. Please be sure to test your child the night before school starts or the morning of. If your child tests positive, please keep your child at home and contact our health office for more information at extension 56089.

COVID-19 Update



Since the early days of COVID, PUSD has had to pivot and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. At last week's meeting, the Pasadena Unified Board of Education approved revisions to COVID safety protocols. The following revisions are now in place at all PUSD schools.





Outdoor in-person meetings/activities with parents/guardians, community members, staff, and students are now allowed with masking strongly recommended.

Indoor in-person meetings/group activities with parents/guardians, community members, staff, students are allowed with masking required for all.

  • Masks are strongly recommended for students and staff indoors in classrooms and other shared spaces.

  • Parent group meetings such as (PTA, SSC, ELAC, AAPC) are allowed in person and may be held outdoors or remotely if the respective parent leadership agree.

  • IEP meetings with parents/guardians may be held in-person or remotely, whichever supports greater parent/guardian participation.

  • Back to School nights will proceed as planned with masks required for all.

Visitors and volunteers are allowed on campus if they self-attest to being fully vaccinated or to having a negative COVID test within the past 48 hours. They must also conduct a symptom screening prior to entering campus and masking is required. All visitors and volunteers must abide by Board policies, regulations, and school rules. Board Policy - Visitors BP 1250.


Back-to-School Nights
will be allowed in-person with mandatory masking.




The following protocols remain in place:


Masks are strongly recommended for students and employees in classrooms and indoors. Masks are required in larger group activities such as assemblies.

Masks are required:

  • on PUSD buses (with accommodations for students)

  • at testing and vaccination clinics

  • during field trips when required by the venue

  • for 10 days after exposure to COVID-19 and after a positive test result

Reentry Testing Before arriving for the first day of school, PUSD is asking every student and employee to take an at-home rapid antigen test on August 10 or 11. Parents/guardians can pick up rapid antigen test kits (containing 2 tests) at their child’s school/children’s center August 8-10. More information https://www.pusd.us/Page/9801

Rapid Antigen Tests The California Department of Public Health has endorsed the emergency use of over-the-counter COVID-19 tests beyond their FDA authorized expiration. Please follow instructions carefully. If a distinct line in the color specified in the instructions does not appear in the “C” control window, the test may be invalid.

Vaccine Clinics Getting vaccinated and boosted is still the best way to slow the spread of COVID-19 to prevent serious illness, hospitalization, and death. PUSD is holding vaccination clinics for ages 3 and older at the PUSD Primary Clinic (351 S. Hudson Ave., Pasadena)

Pre-register at MyTurn.CA.gov or register on site. Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines available. We also accept limited walk-ins.

Ventilation Air purifiers are in place in classrooms and indoor common areas. Filters were changed over the summer, and all lead custodians were trained on how to change both carbon and HEPA filters.

Personal Protective Equipment Masks and hand sanitizers are in stock and available to students and staff.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and flexibility as we strive to keep our students and staff safe and healthy.

Uniforms

We'd like to remind everyone that Webster has a Uniform Policy.

  • Clothes that are clean and in good repair
  • White, navy blue or light blue polo shirts with a collar
  • Navy blue or tan/khaki pants, shorts, skirts, jumpers
  • Optional Friday uniform -- Webster Wolves t-shirt and jeans or uniform pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, jumpers (or wear the regular uniform on Fridays)
  • Athletic or dress shoes
  • Navy sweaters or windbreakers
  • White or navy socks or tights
  • Any heavy jacket
  • Optional Webster Wolves logo items
  • Waistbands should be fitted; otherwise a belt should be worn

Notes: Free Dress Days are held on the last Friday of each month during the year.

Traffic Safety

It is very important that the curb at the front of our school is kept clear so that our buses can safely park to drop off and pick up our students. Please be sure to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws to and from school. Please do not make U-turns on Washington Blvd nor on Pepper Dr. It is especially unsafe at our parking lot exit.

Attendance and Tardies

Please call the main office if you arrive after 8:00am (626) 396-5740). A staff member will meet you at your car for screening and will escort the student to class.

Volunteer Opportunities


Volunteers are authorized for assisting with the supervision of

students. If you are interested please contact Mrs. Rojas, our office manager at rojas.linda@pusd.us.


All volunteers must provide either: a) proof of Covid vaccination prior to starting any

volunteer work; or, b) proof of a negative Covid test performed by a medical

laboratory provider weekly. Proof of vaccination may be provided in the form of a

Covid vaccination card or a screenshot of a digital record with a corresponding QR

code.

Proof of Covid vaccination must include the individual’s name and date(s) of

vaccine administration.

● Proof of vaccination or negative weekly test results for Level 1 volunteer records

should be completed and retained at the school site using the attached “Volunteer

Vaccination/Negative Test Result Attestment” form.

● Volunteers must record their time at the school site using the same “visitors log” that

denotes their name, entry/leave times, phone number, and email address.

● Volunteers are expected to follow the same Covid exposure and quarantine/isolation

protocols that PUSD staff follow as part of the Covid Safety Plan.

Daniel Webster Elementary School has been honored as a California Distinguished School. Great teachers, strong leadership, and parent involvement make Daniel Webster a great school to send our children.

In addition to the great education our students receive, they are also provided with various opportunities to participate in our music and arts activities. We're asking for your support to continue this legacy by donating to the Daniel Webster Annual Fund and help us reach our goal of $50,000.

These funds will be used to financially support our music and arts programs, and to support the instructional goals set forth by the School Site Council
We would like to see every family donate at least $1.00 per week ($50 for the school year) for each child they have enrolled at Daniel Webster.

Think of it as donating less than the cost of a weekly cup of coffee or soft drink to help ensure that your child receives a high quality education.

Box Tops - Box Tops can still be clipped and put into an envelope or ziplock bag and turned into the school in the Box Tops box provided under the shade structure at the drive-thru. You can also upload the virtual version off your receipt. The app is called “Box Tops”. Select Webster as your school of choice and follow the instructions to set up an account to get credit.

Parent Portal

It is necessary that the school has accurate contact information, including a working email. You can update all important contact information on the parent portal. Aeries Parent Portal is a wonderful resource that all parents need to sign up for in order to access student attendance, grades, and teacher information to name a few. If you do not yet have an Aeries Parent Portal account, you can go to https://www.pusd.us/Page/6203 and follow the instructions to create an account. Please make sure you have set up your account before school starts so you know what class your child has been assigned to for the 2022-2023 school year.


In our commitment to take the appropriate measures to protect all student information and privacy, we are making changes to the requirements for all passwords within Aeries student, parent, and staff portal accounts.

Our office hours are Monday 7:30am to 2:00pm and Tuesday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm. Staff and teachers will respond to voicemails and emails as soon as possible which is normally within 24 to 48 business hours.
