What is Neptune?

Discovery

Johann Gottfried Galle then decided to look for the predicted planet and found Neptune in 1846.

Name

*Neptune is named after the Roman Mythology god named Neptune.


* The root “neph” means water, moist, wet, etc.

Size

*Neptune is 17 times Earth’s mass ,58 times Earth’s volume, and 4 times wider than Earth

Atmosphere and Color

*Neptune is a ‘gas giant’ planet which means it is a planet with low density. They usually consists of hydrogen and helium.

*Neptune’s color is a tinted blue due to an unidentified compound and input of red light from methane.

Weather

*Winds can reach up to 1500 mph.(the fastest known winds in our solar system.)

*The great dark spot and the small dark spot are cyclones in Neptune. They happen because of the temp. difference of the heated core and the cold clouds.

Rings.

* Neptune has 5 rings named: Galle, Le Verrier, Lassell, Arago, and Adams.


Moons

The moons are: Triton, Nereid, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Galatea, Larissa, Proteus, Halimede, Psamathe, Sao, Laomedeia, and Neso. Provisional: S/2004 N1
