California Trail Middle School
Parent News May 2019
Note from Mike
A couple of weeks ago, I was walking into the building and my eye was drawn to the daffodils that were blooming at the front of the building and it got me thinking. The bulbs for those flowers were planted 18 months earlier by a group of students during our first CT Serves Day. The bulbs planted were ones split from healthy bunches, spurring this new growth. With continued sun, rain and occasionally addressing weeds and mulch, in the years to come, we will likely see those clusters produce more and more blooms, but it takes time.
Working with middle school kids is pretty similar. Even though we live in an instant gratification world, so much of the good stuff takes time. Kids, like flowers, take time. So much is happening below the surface. They both are taking it all in and need some weeding from time to time to stay focused on the task at hand.
With middle school kids, Spring is when we see some of the new growth but we also see a few more of the weeds/distractions sprout up that need to be tended to, so we can make it to the flowers. As we’re finishing up this school year, I want to thank you for your continued efforts to keep students focused on finishing strong. Your words of wisdom and guidance will serve as fertilizer for these flowers to keep growing.
Make it a Great Month! Mike

· Tdap: Required for entrance into 7th grade.
All current 6th graders who do NOT have both the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines have received a notice.
Additionally, the following immunizations are strongly recommended for middle and high school, but not yet required:
· Hepatitis A: Two doses a minimum of six months apart. (required for preschool, kindergarten and first grade)
· Gardasil (HPV) for cancer prevention: No younger than 9 yrs. Age 11 or older preferred.
