## Writing

Students will write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. Last week we explored many recent articles from the news using https://newsela.com/ that were opinion articles. Students picked one of their choice and began taking their side and planning their piece. We will continue this work this week by finishing our planning and starting to write our rough draft.

## Spelling

Students will spell words that have the /aw/ sound. We have been learning the rules related to words spelled with the /aw/ sound and through many spelling activities working on words that are on our list. We will test on these words in the next week or two.

Students will explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which point(s). After analyzing our class data from the STAR Test we realized this was an area we needed work on as a class. We have been using informational articles from Super Science magazine, graphic organizers, and assessments that include both multiple choice and constructed response answers. We will continue our work with this skill through this week and take our final assessment on Thursday.

## Math

Students will explain how to find common denominators for two fractions such as ⅔ and 4/9.

Students will describe how to find the percent of a number.

Students will find fraction and decimal equivalencies.

Students will estimate solutions to addition and subtraction problems with fractions.

Students will use a visual model to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

Lots of work with fractions over the last two weeks. Our biggest goal is to ensure that each student knows how to add and subtract fractions. We will test this week and move on to multiplying and dividing fractions in the future weeks.

## Social Studies

Students will explain the American Revolution, including the perspectives of patriots and loyalists and factors that explain why the American colonists were successful. Students have been engaged in online articles, artifacts and videos the past couple weeks. We will finish up our work this week and move onto Science.

We will be doing our Valentines Party in the same format as the other where students get to roam from activity to activity. But we will have an opportunity to pass out Valentines to our class right before the party starts. I have provided a list of students below.
