Scholastic Wild West Book Fair This Week!
A Message From Dr. Stabler
Principal For A Day celebration returns to FCS.
Seventy-two schools across Fulton County are helping community leaders learn firsthand what it takes to lead a school when they become "Principal for a Day." Now in its 10th year, the program is held annually during American Education Week, which falls this year during November 13-17.
During this event, business and community leaders will tackle many of the regular duties that leaders face every day, and will learn how rewarding – and demanding – it is to be an educator. Activities range from staff meetings, parent conferences, classroom observations, lunchroom and carpool duty, as well as the many unexpected events that occur every day. We welcome our honorary Principal for A Day, Nicole Lawson, from the Ed Isaakson/Alpharetta YMCA. Ms. Lawson will be with us Friday morning.
We have so much to be thankful for at Abbotts Hill Elementary! Personally, I am thankful that we have such a wonderful school community that believes in our children and is committed to helping our children be successful. I encourage each of you to take a moment and reflect on one or two things you are thankful for. Then, take a moment to think about why you are thankful for these things. Enjoy your holiday.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stabler

Remember to mark your calendars for our Enrichment Cluster Showcase on
Thursday, Dec. 14 from 6:00 – 7:00PM.
You will get the opportunity to experience what your child has been doing in his/her Cluster. There will be live performances, videos, products they have made and much more.
Please plan on attending this amazing event!
We are continuing to need materials for our Enrichment Clusters. Please check the Sign-Up Genius for our needs. We thank you so much for anything you can donate to our Clusters.

National History Bee
Abbotts Hill will be doing the National History Bee again for students in grades 4th and 5th. Last year, we had a student who made it all the way to the state finals! If your child would like to participate in the National History Bee, it is optional, please complete the permission slip (see link below) and return to me on or before Wednesday, Nov. 29.
The preliminary Bee will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5AM. There will be 50 Multiple Choice questions on both US History and World History. The Top Ten will go on to compete in the final Online National History Bee held on Wednesday, January 10AM.
Link to the Permission Slip: Permission Slip.docx
The Official Study Guides can be found on these links. Links for both: Part 1: Study Guide (US History) Part 2: Study Guide (World History)
The Study Guides are meant to literally “guide” students through the most prominent and significant figures and events from history. Reading through these guides should prompt students to think of history not just as a set of facts to memorize, although that’s important too, but instead to consider large-scale historical progress and the truly BIG concepts that tie those facts together. There is so much more history than what is in those pages though, so use these as just a Launchpad for more history exploration!
Abbotts Hill Spelling Bee
Our Abbotts Hill Spelling/Vocabulary Bee will be held on Friday, Dec. 15. Prior to that, each classroom determines a winner and an alternate by having a class Bee. The winners will take part in our school’s Spelling Bee. If a winner is absent, the alternate will take that spot. Our School Bee is a student event only. The winner will then represent Abbotts Hill in the county Spelling Bee where parents can attend. More details will be sent home with our winner and runner-up after our School Bee.
Here is a set of Grade-level Study Lists for Use in Preparation for Classroom Spelling/Vocabulary Bees:
Complete Set of Study Words and Definitions for Grades 1–8
You can also access the National Spelling Bee site for additional ideas. Abbotts Hill is already enrolled.
Clinic News
If your student has borrowed clothes from the clinic recently, please wash and return at your earliest convenience. The clinic is currently in great need of BOYS LONG PANTS 4T-6. Any sized bottoms would be greatly appreciated, boys or girls, and the bottoms with elastic or adjustable waist generally work best. Thank you for your help!

PTA NEWS
We are working toward becoming a National PTA School of Excellence!
The Abbotts Hill PTA knows that a strong partnership among our families, school leaders and community members is important to the success of our students and school. That’s why we are participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program, which grows partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of all students. As part of the process, National PTA requests feedback from families at the beginning and end of the school year. Your feedback helps National PTA generate a customized Roadmap to Excellence that provides specific recommendations for improving our family-school partnership and achieving excellence.

The next International Night Planning Committee meeting will be held on November 16th.
We are getting a late start on planning this year. This upcoming meeting is a critical meeting since attendees will decide whether we want to host International Night at AHE this year or whether we want to explore the possibility of participating in the Johns Creek International Community celebration in April 2018. More details around both options will be provided in the upcoming meeting. Your input is needed, valued and appreciated.

JAGUARS TO LEND A HELPING HAND AGAIN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON… We will be partnering with a local school to provide children from families in need with gifts for the holidays. Each classroom will "adopt" a child. Information about each classroom’s adopted student and his/her wishlist will be sent home before Thanksgiving Break. Donations will be collected through December 8th. This project provides an opportunity for your child to experience the joy of helping others. If you are interested in volunteering, or have questions, please contact Liz Lehnertz at lehn1@hotmail.com.
Abbotts Hill School Musical: Calling all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to audition for a high energy musical parody where Dr. Froid and his offbeat assistants Igor and Marlene zap ordinary students into another dimension of light, sound, music and comedy…it’s known as “The School Zone.” The students are challenged by many hilarious situations such as dealing with being late, rapping about test anxiety, being on trial for chewing gum, choosing friends, avoiding bullies, and surviving lunch!
Visit www.abbottshillpta.org/schoolmusical.html for the registration form, audition packet and schedule. Registration forms and fees are due December 1. Volunteers are needed to make this production a success. Contact Penny Grapner, pennygrapner@gmail.com if you can help!

Volunteers Needed For Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run will be returning to Abbotts Hill for the Spring 2018 season in February! This program, for girls in 3rd through 5th grade, is looking for a couple of parent volunteers to serve as coaches. Coaches do not need to be runners, they just need to be able to commit 4 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. Girls on the Run will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays immediately after school until 4pm. Siblings (even boys!) are welcome to come with you and hang out. (My 1st grader will be there!) For more information on becoming a GOTR coach, visit: https://www.girlsontherunatlanta.org/Coach
Coach training events will be on December 2, January 6, January 13, or January 27. You only need to attend one 😉
Questions? Contact Caryn Young, AHES Site Liaison & Coach, at caryn.young@gmail.com
You and your daughter will both be glad you volunteered!

Parent Volunteer Registration
To keep in compliance with State Law and best practices, for the 2017-2018 school year, we will require that all persons interested in volunteering in the Fulton County School District to register by completing the new online volunteer registration/application process. It is very important that volunteers enter their full legal name as it appears on their government issued ID (please do not use nicknames or “goes by” names on the application). All applicants must wait 24 hours after applying for application processing and approval.
We love our volunteers! Please take a minute to complete this mandatory registration.
