BES Weekly Update
Issue No. 6
A Note From Principal Paquette
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope this newsletter finds you doing well as we enter our seventh week of Digital Teaching and Learning. The weather seems to have finally taken a turn toward spring and the sun is starting to be out each day. This is certainly a distraction for our students as the warmer weather approaches, which brings me to this week’s topic: attendance and time on task.
Teachers continue to reach out daily and keep their daily routine of Meets, read-alouds and office hours for questions or concerns. It is the expectation that students “attend” in the Google Classroom on a daily basis in order to find that day’s lessons and assignments, engage with their teacher and peers and turn in any necessary work or assignments. If your child is sick, please contact your child’s teacher so they can be marked absent and the teacher knows to catch them up on missed work. Teachers have been communicating with me those students who are struggling to engage and attend on a regular basis. I will be reaching out via email and phone to connect with families and discuss ways in which attendance can be improved. We are a team with your family now more than ever in the educational journey of your child. It will take a team approach to keep the students learning and growing during this distance learning time period. If you have questions or concerns or you are in need of support regarding engagement or your child’s education, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or to me directly. We are all here to support you!
As a reminder, BCSD is following NY State mandated PAUSE order through May 15th. We should know more about the next steps from the Governor in the next few days. As we know more you will find that information on the District webpage and Facebook pages.
Stay well and stay safe.
Educationally yours,
Sarah Paquette

Beekmantown Elementary Celebrates Earth Day!
Our students celebrated earth day in many different ways. For example, students helped pick up trash on the roadside in their neighborhood, many students made mandalas for a class assignment and some made earth day crafts.
Celebrating Earth Day in PK4!
Students in Mrs. Poe's class completed an activity for Earth Day, Litter Letters. Along with their parents, they wrote uppercase and lowercase letters and students picked up the litter and sorted it.
Wallace
We had one bottle of water and one bottle of water with litter. We had the bottles sit for 2 days and then compared the water. Then we talked about how litter would hurt the Earth's water.

First Grade Reading Group with Mrs. Titherington-Raville
On Thursday, during their group meeting with Mrs. Titherington-Raville first graders were having some fun! They played a Tic Tac Toe game that reviewed blends and digraphs. Both Sophie and Mattie gave it a “two thumbs up.”
A message from Mattie’s mom: “Mattie has so much fun on your Google Meets! I really appreciate all of the time and effort you do to make things fun for her!“
Chalk Challenge
Second grader, Brock Benware created a "chalk challenge" in front of his home last week. His dad invited local heroes such as teachers, fire fighters, police officers, and more to take on the challenge, and they did! Brock's chalk challenge also known as #hopechallenge, hit national news and was featured on NBC5 and Fox News!

Fun Friday!
Fun Friday fun continues...Mrs. Boire and Mrs. Mieles continued their surprise visits with some of their students. They made sure to practice social distancing. It was so nice to see each other in person.
Fun in Ms. Donahue's Class
Last week, Ms. Donahue's class worked on Earth Day activities for BAZ throughout the week. Each day, they played online games, watched videos, and answered journal prompts focused on taking care of our Earth. In addition, our class was assigned to help clean up the Earth by doing a "spring clean up" near their homes. The students did an outstanding job doing their part in helping our planet!
Music with Ms. Wilson
Parker, a kindergarten student set up these random things he found under his bed to make his own "drum set".
Below, Addison and Kolin play the Cups Song during their Music Google Meet.
Technology with Ms. Woodward
This week in Technology with Miss Woodward, students learned about mandalas and created their own nature mandala. Students read "Zen Ties," by Jon J. Muth, and "Stone Soup," also by Jon J. Muth, to think about being patient, mindful, and coming together as a community. Mandalas take patience, planning, and flexibility for when ideas don't go as planned - the students created beautiful masterpieces in this STREAM activity!
