AIG Schedule
Identified Fourth and Fifth Grade Pull Out Groups:
Reading: Monday and Tuesday
Math: Wednesday and Thursday
Intellectual: Friday
All groups will be held during each grade level's All Hands on Deck time.
Fourth and Fifth Grade Identified Students - Differentiated Education Plan (DEP)
Differentiated Education Plans (DEPs) are written yearly. Each student will receive a DEP which outlines their AIG service delivery methods this year.
You will receive a large brown envelope labeled AIG Communication Folder. The envelope contains the original DEP (please sign and return to school by September 12), along with a parent letter that explains how to navigate the document. There is a second copy of the DEP enclosed for your records. Please return the signed DEP in the brown envelope. I will keep these envelopes for any other paperwork that may be sent home.
Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grade Nurturing Program
NHCS uses the Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS) curriculum to teach different types of thinking and problem solving to our students K-3. Utilizing the PETS curriculum, students work through lessons on Multiple Intelligence, Convergent and Divergent Thinking, Spatial Reasoning, Evaluative Thinking, Creativity, and Inventive Thinking.
Third grade students will also participate in an analogies unit. The unit covers verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial, shape) analogies to prepare students for the universal screener, CogAT.
NHCS AIG Nomination
A student may be nominated for gifted services at any time throughout the year. Students can be nominated by a parent, a teacher, a peer, or can nominate themselves. If you would like to nominate a child for gifted services, please complete a nomination form and return to Mrs. Morrow. Nomination forms can be printed from her site, picked up at the front office, or you may request one from your child's teacher.
Once nominated for services, data will be collected from the parents, teachers, and student. Once the data is collected, the Anderson Match Team will meet to determine if gifted services are appropriate or if additional data is needed.
The Match Team is composed of the Gifted Education Specialist, an administrator, and teachers. The team uses multiple criteria to evaluate gifted potential. Students must meet at least 2 of the 3 criteria listed below in order to qualify for gifted services:
1. Aptitude (by standardized test scores) - Indicator of a student's capacity for learning
2. Achievement (by standardized test scores) - Indicator of a student's knowledge
3. Artifacts - Indicators of a student's potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, and/or environment. (ex: work samples, observable behaviors, etc.)
Once a determination of service delivery has been made, the Match Team will notify parents.
Please Note:
1. While a child may be nominated at any time throughout the school year, formal identification will occur only when the Match Team meets.
2. A child does not need to formally qualify for the AIG program in order to receive gifted services. Students often work with the Gifted Education Specialist in flexible groups throughout the year.
Third Grade Universal Screener - October
Each third student will participate in the CogAT assessment. A formal testing letter will be sent home prior to testing.

New Hanover County Schools Gifted Advisory Council (GAC)
Please let me know if you would like to serve as a GAC liaison. The Gifted Advisory Council (GAC) is a parent and community organization for NHCS that reviews all aspects of our AIG program and makes recommendations for program improvement. It is comprised of community members, parents/families of AIG students, teachers, and other professional staff. Each NHC school is invited to select a liaison to attend monthly meetings and report relevant issues to the school. This could also be handled in a group approach by alternating meetings.
