What are we learning about this week?
Social Studies:
Social Studies
People Worth Celebrating
Students will identify figures who exemplify good citizenship and have helped to change our community throughout history.
We will be starting on Monday:
Integrated Writers and Poets in History
This unit is intended to be integrated with Language Arts and other areas throughout the year. The students will understand the importance of writers and artists to the cultural heritage of communities.
Language Arts
Poetry
Poetry is a powerful, literary method to convey truth, use imagination, and share experiences to evoke an emotional response from the reader. Poetry is all around us in songs, greeting cards, jingles, and woven into texts of books. We will immerse students in all different types of poetry for the next few weeks.
Math: Unit 6
Geometry
In this unit your child will:
❚ Describe and classify two-dimensional shapes, especially quadrilaterals
❚ Calculate area and perimeter
❚ Represent fractions as parts of a whole shape Your child will learn and practice these skills by solving problems like those shown below. Keep this sheet for reference when you’re helping with homework.
Habit 6 - Synergize - Together is Better!
“The only way to have a friend is to be one.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson
This month your child is learning how to use Habit 6: Synergize – Together is better
Today more than ever children interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, and cultures. Their circle of friends, their schoolmates, and their athletic teams are much more diverse than those of even a generation ago. The person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Your child's success depends on being able to understand, appreciate, and includes others.
This month the students will learn what it means to value other people’s strengths and learn from them, get along well with others, even people who are different, and work well in groups. They will learn how to seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because by teaming with others they can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone.
I encourage you to partner with us in teaching your student to practice The Seven Habits at home. To learn more about The Seven Habits and how they can be used at home, visit "Parent's Place" at http://www.theleaderinme.org/parents/
