What's Up in the Classroom?
Math - I challenged the students this week with exploring 2-digit addition problems. They were given 1 cubes, 10 sticks and 100 blocks (the 100 blocks were for a challenge if they so desired) and told to build each number I gave them. From there, they exchanged 10 cubes for 1 sticks and added up all the manipulatives. They did surprisingly well for just being introduced to it. The idea was to show them that numbers mean something and to understand why they carry numbers over 9 into new columns (place value) when they add using the traditional method (which I will begin to teach to them next along with other options) .
Science - Students started their study of rocks this week. They learned about igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The point of the rock study was so students would start to understand that rock makes up our earth (which is our main focus of study - the solar system).
Writing - This week students were introduced to writing reviews to persuade others. They were given many options such as reviewing a restaurant, game, place or movie. They were able to give a favorable review or a not so favorable review. Students included star ratings and lots of reasons for their opinions.
