BLOG ~ 5 WAYS TO HELP SCHOLARS AVOID CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM - This month we’re raising awareness about the importance of attending class and being present at school. Read our latest blog post for tips to help keep your scholar from becoming chronically absent.
CHARACTER DAY ~ Join us in celebrating Character Day this Wednesday, September 26. Watch the acclaimed films “30,000 Days” (11 minutes), “The Science of Character” (8 minutes), “The Adaptable Mind” (11 minutes) and the feature-length film, “Connected.” Each video link includes a number of resources available on Character Day, and every day. Join the conversation online using the hashtag #CultivatingCharacter.
END OF LEARNING PERIOD ~ Can you believe that Learning Period 1 will end this Friday, September 28? Please be sure you have completed all of your Activity Logs in ParentSquare by this Friday. (This week’s will be sent to you on Friday.) Also, please be sure to upload your scholar’s work samples into Seesaw by this Friday, although before is better! Here are some helpful work sample guides for TK-8 and high school. Contact your EF if you have any questions.

OPTIONS ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ~ Please join us for a chat about social studies curriculum this Thursday, September 27 at 8pm. During this first Options Roundtable of the year, we will discuss some popular vendor choices for social studies, as well as provide an opportunity for learning coaches to share their experiences with each other. TEACHING BOOKS DATABASE ~ Fully-funded for all Californians via the K-12 Online Content Project, you now have access to TeachingBooks, a curated collection of digital resources that brings children’s and young adult books to life. They strive to enrich reading for everyone in the community, including librarians, teachers, scholars, parents, and all who share a joy for books. Backyard Owls ~ Teaching science in the middle grades can be daunting to some, but there are lots of resources available to make the journey easier! Backyard Owls is an online blog with many interesting articles and valuable resources for teaching and learning science. Take a look at their website for more information and to read the latest articles.
Shakespeare Kids ~ “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” A new vendor with Compass Charter Schools, Shakespeare Kids, studies the timeless tales of the bard himself and teachers your scholar the fine skills of performing arts. With various locations, Shakespeare Kids is specifically looking for young actors to join their Simi Valley classes. Here is a look at what your scholar might experience after joining Shakespeare Kids.
Math with Mrs. Fish ~ An engaging and aesthetically pleasing math curriculum are just a few words to describe Math with Mrs. Fish. A new vendor with Compass, Mrs. Fischer offers comprehensive math instruction for 6th graders this year, with the hope of expanding her program to include 7th and 8th grade in the future. If you have a 6th grader, take a look at this sample instructional video to give you an idea of what a typical lesson with Mrs. Fischer might look like.

High School College Career Success Café "How to Hit a Homerun on Your Interview !" - High school scholars, please join us for our monthly CCS Cafe from 12:30 to 1 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, September 25 to discover tips and tricks about the interview process. We are excited to welcome Ms. Trivino, our Director of Human Resources, as our guest speaker. Ms. Trivino will share some interview strategies from the perspective of the employer.
Middle School Workshop "Peer to Peer" – Our middle school scholars are invited to join this workshop from 12 to 1 pm this Thursday, September 27 to explore real-life examples and tools on how to respond to harassing text and/or social media messages.
High School Senior (12th Grade) Presentation – Our high school seniors are invited to join our counselors for a presentation from 12 to 1 pm this Thursday, September 27 that will discuss important information about their senior year, including a review of the graduation requirements, tips for surviving senior year, and life after CCS.
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS ~ There are two college scholarships with approaching submission deadlines: the Susan Steelman Bragato Scholarship and the Don’t Text and Drive Scholarship. Scholars and their families are encouraged to learn more information about each scholarship and apply prior to the upcoming September deadlines.
FINANCIAL AID ~ The Federal Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) & California Dream Act Application (CADAA) open next Monday, October 1.
Completing the FAFSA or CADAA application is an important step in college planning. We encourage high school seniors to complete the FAFSA or CADAA early to prevent any technical issues that could cause delays. These applications may qualify scholars for grants, loans, and/or work-study to help pay for college. Scholars should only submit one of these applications. Please contact Ms. Olson, College and Career Readiness Counselor, at molson@compasscharters.org if you have any questions about financial aid or if you need support completing the application.
