LVHS Weekly!
Excellence In All We Do.
March 24, 2019
Welcome Back!
Please plan to review expectations in your classrooms over the next few days. It's a great time to reset and review classroom and schoolwide expectations. I know they are older, but I guarantee that your students won't know what you expect from them if you don't set the expectations. They come from different upbringings and households and each of our classrooms is different. If you want them to meet your expectations, it's not fair to just assume they know them.
Here are a few big ticket, schoolwide expectations to review and enforce consistently, along with your own classroom expectations-
1. Starting class with a student-centered warm-up.
2. No fly zone the first and last 15 minutes of class (first and last 10 of advisory). No one should be in the hallways during these times.
3. No hats and no hoodies.
4. No visible piercings, except earrings.
5. Passes in the hallways during class periods.
6. We love our students and they are the reason we come to work each and every day!
Have a great first day back. There is a ton in this newsletter. Spring. Has. Sprung!
We need all white folding tables returned to the closet by the stairs no later than Tuesday morning at 8 am! We need every single one for our college and career fair on Thursday! We need them in enough time to know if we need to borrow some from other campuses. Thank you!!

Grades due Tuesday at 8:00 am - read below!
Directions for Reporting Grades for Semester 2, Third Nine Weeks
1. All grades for work assigned for the third nine weeks should be in your grade book by 8:00am, Tuesday March 26th. Any delay in posting grades will cause EVERYONE’S GRADES to be delayed because proof sheets can’t be run!
2. If a student is absent and they owe you work, please put an ‘I’ (for Incomplete) in for their grade. They have until 4:00pm on Friday, March 29th to make up the grade.
3. Proof sheets will be run Tuesday, March 26th, and delivered to you that morning.
4. Do not make any changes in grade book from 8 AM, Tuesday, March 26th, until you receive notice. When you receive your proof sheets, make sure each student has a grade. Please see Meghin Huerta if you have questions about new students’ incoming grades.
5. Examine your proof sheets carefully. Make any corrections to the proof sheets in RED ink. Sign and date each sheet and return to Ms. Becker by 8:00 am, Wednesday, March 27th.
6. Remember, you cannot assign a 9 week grade on the report card higher than 100.
7. Double-check any 9 weeks grades of 68’s and 69’s. Please review grades prior to submitting. Changing a grade from passing to failing after your have submitted them in gradebook will not change a student’s ineligibility except in the case of a calculation error.
8. Report cards will be run Wednesday, March 27th.
9. After report cards are run, any changes made to the grade book must be submitted via Grade Change Form. These are available on the counter outside Ms. Becker’s office.
Thanks for your help.
Tyrita, Queen of Registration
Just wanted to be sure you saw on the calendar...Faculty meeting Wednesday at 7:30 am in Coach Turner's room. Please be prompt...we have a lot to cover and will start at 7:30 sharp!
Sub Plan Requirements
Subbing is a really hard job. We need to do whatever we can to make it easier for them.
On Wednesday, you should be receiving a purple folder that will have your name on it. Inside, there will be all kinds of goodies preloaded in it for our subs:
o A copy of our bell schedule.
o Our master schedule.
o Phone number listings.
o Hall passes.
o Advisory expectations.
o A map of the school.
o Any other information the teacher wants you to have.
o A quick classroom feedback form for the teacher. Please leave this on top of this folder at the end of the day.
IN ADDITION TO THIS, when you are gone, you should include in the purple folder:
- Specific lesson plans for the sub to follow, including a schedule of your classes.
- ROLL SHEETS TO TAKE ATTENDANCE EACH PERIOD.
- Your classroom expectations and suggestions for classroom management.
- Helpful teachers to turn to in case they have questions or concerns.
- Details on specific student needs, such as assignment accommodations, health concerns, or small group testing, if applicable.
You may place these in your purple sub folder or you may leave directions in the purple folder on where to find your plans. Do not assume a sub will know where your plans can be found.
When a sub calls me and says, "I don't think they left me any plans/roll sheets", my response will be - "Look in the purple sub folder."
We will discuss more on Wednesday, but if you have info to share, please be sure to let me know!
Senior Meetings for at-risk seniors
Action Required - College and Career Day this Thursday!
We are very excited about our 4th Annual College & Career Fair on Thursday, March 28, 9:05 - 11:20am. There will be over 40 businesses, colleges, and military representatives eager to speak to our students! All students will be attending according to the following guidelines:
Step 1 - Determine which group your 2nd period class fits into:
Group 1- Classes of mainly juniors and sophomores.
Group 2 - Classes of mainly freshmen.
Group 3 - Classes of mainly seniors. (Spoiler - your students are not attending during 2nd period. Seniors can visit during advisory.)
Step 2 - Follow this schedule:
9:05am Group One visits the fair. Students will report to their 2nd period class at 9:00 am. Teachers will take roll and then students will be escorted to the gym by their 2nd period teacher.
9:45am Group One will return to 2nd period class.
9:55am Group Two visits the fair. Students will report to their 2nd period class at 9:00. Teachers will take roll and then students will be escorted to the gym by their 2nd period teacher at 9:55am.
10:35am Group Two will exit the fair at the conclusion of 2nd period.
10:45am Group Three (Seniors) visits the fair during Advisory.
11:20am Group Three exits the fair.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support of this event!
Did you turn in your 3rd nine weeks self-reflection form in Eduphoria? It was due on Friday, March 15. Stu and I will be checking early this week. Don't let Stu down.
Tuesday and Thursday ELA tutorials during advisory
You might be called on to take in some additional advisory students as we use this time to prepare for things like UIL and STAAR. This week, we have several 9th and 10th graders who will be in tutorials with Cody, Frank, Steve, Tanya, and Karen. In the interest of time, these students will go straight to these tutorial classes.
Please use this link to check on any missing kids from your advisory -

Very serious - Read - Update grades weekly...
...This includes entering zeroes for assignments that are missing. While I know you are trying to give the student some grace by not entering zeroes for missing assignments, it is not a very effective way to communicate a true reflection of their grade. I've received more than one email from parents lately about lots of grades/several zeroes being entered the morning of progress reports.
In summary, enter grades weekly, even if they are zeros. UNLESS it is for a student who gets extended time through 504/SpEd and it is still within their extra time allotment. :)
Old, but important, stuff -
first 15, last 15 minutes of class are a no fly zone. don't allow students to leave your class during these times. first 5, last 5 during advisory.
School Safety - You are a big part of it
- Keep your classroom door locked.
- Always make sure visitors have a badge. If not, alert the front office immediately. Ask the visitor to go get checked in.
- Never prop open doors, including the outside doors.
- Encourage students to share concerns about other students - using SafeAlert (you should have an info poster in your room) or by confiding in an adult.
- Take concerns and threats seriously - contact the office if concerns arise.
- Be in the hallways during passing periods.
- Don't be afraid to be a little paranoid - alert the office if you have a concern ASAP.
- If you see something that should result in a lockdown (think active shooter), be prepared to use the phone system to alert the school. Do not count on someone else to make that call.
Semester Exam Exemptions!
Juniors and Seniors at Lago Vista High School with no outstanding fines or monetary obligations may be exempt from a final (second semester ONLY) exam if they meet the following criteria and follow the guidelines as written below:
Attendance Criteria:
Perfect Attendance during the second semester in ALL YOUR CLASSES: EXEMPT 3 FINALS.
NO MORE THAN 1 DAY ABSENT TOTAL in the second semester: EXEMPT 2 FINALS.
NO MORE THAN 2 DAYS ABSENT TOTAL in the second semester: EXEMPT 1 FINAL.
A student who has missed more than 6 absences per period in any class for the year may not be eligible to exempt ANY exams.
Grade Criteria: At least an 80% semester average and an 75% final (yearly) average in the class the student is exempting.
Guidelines:
· Exempting a final exam does not entitle a student to be absent on the day or period of the final. Students must still attend classes, regardless of exemptions earned. Students absent during finals will lose their exemptions in accordance with the above exemption criteria.
· For the sake of exemptions, any attendance disputes must be addressed and resolved with the attendance clerk within 3 school days of the absence or tardy.
· If you fail to meet the attendance eligibility requirements because of additional absences, you will receive an Incomplete in the course you requested to exempt. You will have 10 school days to come in and take the missed exam before a zero is recorded in its place.
The following absences do not affect exemption status:
1. Medical appointments which are documented with a doctor’s note furnished to the attendance office upon return to school.
2. Funeral for immediate family members up to 3 days.
3. School functions.
4. Religious holidays.
5. Military deployment of an immediate family member.
6. Required court dates.
7. College days (up to 2 per year).
Change this year - Because of the timing of the STAAR tests, 9th and 10th graders will not be able to use those results for exempting their semester exams and are therefore not eligible for semester exam issues until their junior year.
Advisory norms
1. Students who have failed a course for the semester shall not be allowed to leave advisory to attend a club. I will send out the failure list tomorrow morning.
2. In order for a student to attend another teacher's advisory, they must have a pass from that teacher.
Stop sending kids to other teachers classrooms without a pass from that teacher, please. Don't send a kid to another classroom unless you have written correspondence with that teacher that you want them.
Why join PTA?
2. By becoming a member, you are eligible for teacher grants and scholarships.
3. You more than make up the $10 fee with the luncheons they provide us every month!
Hard copies of this form will be placed in your box or click on the image above to download and print. Please turn in the form and money to Mrs. Kaiser or Mrs. Becker. Thanks!
